Abstract

Through a progressive series of exercises - accompanied by observational studies, examples and applied theory - Conversations with Form: A Workbook for Students of Architecture improves designers' understanding, dexterity and resilience in making form. It specifically focuses on the skills needed to succeed in the everyday context in which the vast majority of architects will ultimately design and build, wherein no one designs in isolation and existing conditions never represent a tabula rasa. The text begins by familiarizing readers with utilizing step-by-step sequences of moves to steer the development of built form and rapidly moves to designs of increasing complexity. These design plays treat a wide-ranging series of topics including structures, patterns, types, systems and other kinds of shared form principles. Conversations with Form is a workbook for honing hands-on skills and tools of the architect's trade. Beautifully illustrated and focused on practical, usable information, the book provides architectural students with an accessible and useable handbook for their design practice.

Abstract

In his wide-ranging study of architecture and cultural evolution, Chris Abel argues that, despite progress in sustainable development and design, resistance to changing personal and social identities shaped by a technology-based and energy-hungry culture is impeding efforts to avert drastic climate change. The book traces the roots of that culture to the coevolution of Homo sapiens and technology, from the first use of tools as artificial extensions of the human body, to the motorised cities spreading around the world, whose uncontrolled effects are changing the planet itself. Advancing a new concept of the meme, called the 'technical meme', as the primary agent of cognitive extension and technical embodiment, Abel proposes a theory of the 'extended self' encompassing material and spatial as well as psychological and social elements, which now reaches out into the virtual world of cyberspace. Drawing upon research from philosophy, psychology and the neurosciences, the book presents a new approach to environmental and cultural studies. Written in a clear and engaging manner, it addresses a broad readership searching for insights into the origins of the environmental crisis.

Abstract

Proposes another set of terms and structures to talk about architecture, without requiring that it be interesting. This book explores a set of alternatives to the interesting and imagines how architecture might be positioned more broadly in the world using these other terms. The alternatives presented here are labelled as boring, confusing, and comforting. Along with interesting, these three terms make up the four chapters of the book. Each chapter introduces its topic through an analysis of a different image, which serves to unpack the specific character of each term and its relationship to architecture. In addition to text, the book contains over 50 case studies using 100 drawings and images. These are presented in parallel to the text and show what architecture may look like through the lens of these other terms.

Abstract

The Social Design Reader explores the ways in which design can be a catalyst for social change. Bringing together key texts of the last fifty years, editor Elizabeth Resnick traces the emergence of the notion of socially responsible design. This volume represents the authentic voices of the thinkers, writers and designers who are helping to build a 'canon' of informed literature which documents the development of the discipline. The Social Design Reader is divided into three parts. Section 1: Making a Stand includes an introduction to the term 'social design' and features papers which explore its historical underpinnings. Section 2: Creating the Future documents the emergence of social design as a concept, as a nascent field of study, and subsequently as a rapidly developing professional discipline, and Section 3: A Sea Change is made up of papers acknowledging social design as a firmly established practice. Contextualising section introductions are provided to aid readers in understanding the original source material, while summary boxes clearly articulate how each text fits with the larger milieu of social design theory, methods, and practice.

Abstract

The book investigates speculative filmic architectural projects and animations that go beyond representing buildings, touching upon issues concerning medium, act of representation, or conducting criticism on history, culture, society, or urban politics, along with the mediated character of contemporary spatial experience – interpreting it primarily through protocols of architectural imaging. The book centres on the influence of simulation and cinematic design on visionary or speculative architecture. It outlines the impact of film and animation in architectural representation through key projects. The opening analysis is useful in contextualizing speculative architectural projects, while the later chapters link the theory to the imagery. Stasiowski uses a diverse collection of interesting case studies that are easy to read and well-chosen to support his argument. This is a well-researched work and comprehensive review of speculative architecture and various media that describe it. Stasiowski makes a thorough argument about the use of cinema and animation as a method of architectural visualization. Stasiowki’s book sets itself apart from other work in the same area by in discussing speculative projects in relation to cinema. and specifically, the effect that modern technologies are having on the subject now and in its potential futures. The borderline between material environment and spatialized imagery becomes progressively more blurred, while demand for visionary works that would make sense of this merging, has never been greater. It will appeal primarily to architects and designers, filmmakers and academics. It may also be of interest to artists, set designers, and film production designers.

Abstract

This book offers a systematic account of the process of designing in architecture. Design thinking can be regarded as a fundamentally different way of knowing the world and a particular form of addressing creative problems. In this publication, the authors undertake to explore multiple and often controversial theoretical stances on the topic. Underlying principles of inquiry are present in all designing and a process takes place involving empathy or listening carefully before storytelling. Prototyping and testing of solutions are illustrated in the book with many examples, seen from different vantage points. In short, design thinking is a way of knowing and enabling being in the world and leads to a better understanding of architecture.

Abstract

Photography and architecture have a long and intense relationship - and both are accompanied by debates about how, as disciplines, they hover somewhere between service and art form. The book examines how photos are used to digitally reproduce, inform about, and archive buildings. Moreover, it is dedicated to the concept of the use of a building being the visual content of architectural photography, and also questions how the photograph influences the constructed reality. What is the status of architectural photography today? For one, photographs provide mass media exposure for the buildings; however, the photographers' own attitude, interests, and style result in highly individual images of the built reality. They tell their own stories of the building, decide whether to capture it occupied or not, dynamic or naturalistic, with or without context, as a new building or in use. How does this photographic perspective affect the way in which buildings and their architects are perceived? Many architects collaborate for long periods of time with specific photographers. How much do photographs influence the actual design? Which photos serve to publicize the building, which lend a new perspective? In today's flood of images, where there is almost no difference between photographs and renderings, this publication refreshingly brings architectural photography to the fore while allowing a peek behind the scenes. In eight richly illustrated chapters, the relationship between architecture and photography is subjected to a changing view. The different positions enter into a fascinating dialog. Insights and visual beauty go hand in hand. With essays by: Angelika Fitz, Elke Krasny, Gabriele Lenz, and Philipp UrsprungWith photographs by Markus Bstieler, Peter Eder, Gisela Erlacher, Pez Hejduk, Eduard Hueber, Hertha Hurnaus, Markus Kaiser, Angelo Kaunat, Bruno Klomfar, Alexander Eugen Koller, Zita Oberwalder, Pia Odorizzi, Stefan Olah, Paul Ott, Lukas Schaller, Manfred Seidl, Margherita Spiluttini, Rupert Steiner, Dietmar Tollerian, Günter Wett Welchen Status hat die Architekturfotografie heute?
