Abstract

Although the character, course, and consequences of Calvinism have long been the subject of controversy, there is no doubt that the Calvinist movement left an enduring stamp on Europe, North America, and the rest of western civilization. This book brings together the work of fourteen eminent historians who reexamine the ways in which Calvinism affected--and was affected by--the various societies in which it took root. The volume features a survey of Calvin's life and work, three essays on France and the great diaspora of the Huguenots after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, and seven papers on other European nations and North America. A concluding essay offers a stimulating discussion of the relationship between Calvinism and capitalism.

Abstract

Church discipline and the Reformed consistory, whether in Hungary, the Swiss world, France, The Netherlands or the British Isles, have become the subject of intense scholarly discussion. The fifteen essays gathered in this volume examine the process of censure and excommunication across Europe from the mid-sixteenth through the late eighteenth centuries. They reevaluate the relationship of women to ecclesiastical authority and explore the complex ways in which exclusion from the Lord’s Supper operated. Several contributors trace the decrease in excommunication over time; others underscore national differences in its nature and the surprising infrequency of application. Together, they offer a fresh, unanticipated and illuminating portrait of the reform of morals associated with John Calvin and his followers. Contributors are Edwin Bezzina, Serge Brunet, Philippe Chareyre, Christian Grosse, Robert M. Kingdon, Suzannah Lipscomb, Michelle Magdelaine, Françoise Moreil, Graeme Murdock, Judith Pollmann, Didier Poton, Salomon Rizzo, Andrew Spicer, Karen Spierling, Nicole Staremberg Goy, and Margo Todd.

Abstract

This volume contains the papers of the international RefoRC conference on 'Reformed Majorities and Minorities in Early Modern Europe' as it was organized by the Johannes a Lasco Bibliothek, Emden in cooperation with the Faculty of 'Artes Liberales' of the University of Warsaw. The conference took place April 10-12, 2013 in Emden and was part of the research project 'Doctrina et Tolerantia' directed by the Johannes a Lasco Bibliothek. The contributions in this volume deal with the question how the relation between doctrine and toleration was dealt with in territories with a Reformed majority. Did the refugee-experience of the Reformed make them tolerant or militant? How did official policy relate to everyday practice? Were there different opinions on this issue within the Reformed tradition? The answers to these questions give more insights into the diversity of international Calvinism and the way theory was put into practice.
