In theorie had België een van de meest vrije filmkeuringssystemen ter wereld. In films voor volwassenen (16+) kon zowat alles. Enkel films die voor kinderen bedoeld waren, moesten gekeurd en geschikt bevonden worden. In de praktijk liep het helemaal anders. Tot in de jaren 1990 werden hele scènes uit films geknipt, voor ze in de zalen kwamen. Distributeurs deden er immers alles aan om hun films 'Kinderen Toegelaten' te krijgen Vanaf 1921 vroeg en kreeg de Belgische filmkeuringscommissie talloze verminkingen van films die nu vaak als klassiekers worden gezien. Bovendien werden films ook aangepast door andere instanties en wetten. Lange tijd was de Katholieke filmkeuring bijvoorbeeld een machtig instituut.Voor het eerst wordt de geschiedenis van die Verboden Beelden in kaart gebracht Het resultaat is niet alleen een boeiend overzicht van wat Belgen niet te zien kregen, het is vooral een schets van veranderende zeden en normen. -- Quatrième de couverture

Naast een chronologisch luik behandelt het boek belangrijke thema's zoals de toekomst van de film, de moeilijkheden van de art house-bioscoop, of de gespannen verhouding tussen verzuiling en film. Antwerpen en Gent vormen de locaties voor enkele concrete gevalstudies. Culturele, sociale en structurele analyses worden aangevuld met inzichten over de artistieke ontwikkelingen van de film en de bioscooparchitectuur. Ten slotte krijgen politieke aspecten (bijvoorbeeld katholieken en film), de plaats van film in de vrije tijd en affichekunst ruime aandacht.

In tegenstelling tot buurlanden zoals Frankrijk, Groot-Brittannië en Nederland bestaat er in België geen gids naar audiovisuele bronnen. De nieuwe publicatie Bewegend Geheugen biedt een geannoteerd overzicht van de belangrijkste vindplaatsen voor film-, televisie- en andere audiovisuele bronnen in Vlaanderen. De gids richt zich niet alleen naar archieven en de audiovisuele sector (omroepen, productiehuizen, beeldresearchers,...) maar heeft ook een ruimer doelpubliek (studenten en onderzoekers binnen de domeinen van geschiedenis, communicatiewetenschappen,...). Bewegend Geheugen biedt een handig werkinstrument voor wie op zoek gaat naar actuele of historische beelden over Vlaanderen. Het boek bevat talrijke illustraties, waarvan heel wat in kleur. De publicatie kwam tot stand onder de redactie van Prof. dr. Daniël Biltereyst en dr. Roel Vande Winkel in het kader van het onderzoeksproject Licht op een collectief verleden (Max-Wildiersfonds FWO-Vlaanderen 2000-2003). Bewegend Geheugen is de eerste publicatie in de nieuwe boekenreeks Film & TV Studies. Deze meertalige reeks publiceert kritisch wetenschappelijk onderzoek over film, televisie en hedendaagse beeldcultuur.
