Comment le fils prodigue s'est-il embarqué dans un siècle résolument athée ? Pourquoi les écrivains contemporains ont-ils adopté l'enfant qui désobéit puis revient pleurer dans les bras de son père ? Drôle de modèle pour une époque qui prône la liberté individuelle et voue la famille aux gémonies. Or le voici qui s'invite dans la littérature, la peinture, le théâtre, la musique, le cinéma et même. . . les séries télé. Mais pourquoi donc cette multiplication de fils prodigues ? Pour répondre à cette question, les spécialistes convoqués s'aventurent sur les terrains littéraires et artistiques, mais aussi sociologiques et psychanalytiques. Le constat est qu'il y a bien une histoire du fils prodigue aux XXe et XXIe siècles et cette histoire dit quelque chose de notre époque. Ce personnage biblique incarne le destin de l'homme moderne. Quelle apothéose pour ce garçon dissolu qui voulait manger ce que mangent les porcs ! Après Rilke, il devient le symbole de la liberté, de la quête de soi, de l'affirmation de l'individu contre la famille : c'est un rebelle. Il est seul, libre et mélancolique : c'est un artiste. Ce fils prodigue nous réserve d'étranges métamorphoses...

Wesley Olmstead examines the parables of the Two Sons, the Tenants and the Wedding Feast against the backdrop of the wider Matthean narrative. He explores Matthew's characterization of the Jewish leaders, the people and the nations, and assesses the respective roles of Israel and the nations in the plot of Matthew's Gospel. Against the current of contemporary Matthean scholarship, Olmstead argues both that the judgement this trilogy announces falls upon Israel (and not only her leaders) and that these parables point to the future inclusion of the nations in the nation that God had promised to raise up from Abraham. Bringing both literary-critical and redaction-critical tools to bear on the texts at hand, Olmstead not only elucidates the intended meanings of this parabolic trilogy but also attempts to determine the responses they elicited from their first readers. Transcending Matthean scholarship, this book has implications for all Gospel studies.
