"This deeply researched collection offers a comprehensive introduction to the eighteenth-century trade in street literature--ballads, chapbooks, and popular prints--in England and Scotland. Offering detailed studies of a selection of the printers, types of publication, and places of publication that constituted the cheap and popular print trade during the period, these essays delve into ballads, slip songs, story books, pictures, and more to push back against neat divisions between low and high culture, or popular and high literature."--

"Clashes between vendors and authorities have become a common feature of our society. It is really a fact that vending has come with it some undesirable effects such a chaotic and disorderly business practices. Nevertheless, we cannot afford to turn a blind eye on vending or even eradicate it, especially when taking into account the fact that our employment levels are on the minimum side. In fact, most families have been sustained through vending during economic hard times of our society. This situation whereby the relationship between vendors and the local authorities is reminiscent of a 'cat and mouse affair' is unsustainable and does not benefit anyone. High costs are incurred in carrying out the fights, property at times is destroyed, there are injuries and in some rare cases fatalities and arrests are made. This book sought to offer practical solutions of how vending can get organised and by systematic much to the benefit our society socially and economically. Lessons were taken from other cases the world over. Entrepreneurs, the policy maker, the civic society and students will find this book much enlightening and interesting. Its contribution adds much value towards sustainable efforts of transforming Zimbabwe's economy and society to a progressive one"--Back cover.

An intimate portrait of India's child runaways, and the sociopolitical forces shaping their lives This intimate portrait examines the tracks, journeys, and experiences of child runaways in northern India. Jonah Steinberg situates children's decisions to leave home and flee for the city in their larger cultural, social, and historical contexts, and considers histories of landlessness and debt servitude in narratives of child dislocation. The resulting work is an original perspective on the sociological trends in postcolonial India and a unique treatment of a population of individuals who live on the margin of society.

"Since the 2011 Arab Spring street art has been a vehicle for political discourse in the Middle East, and has generated much discussion in both the popular media and academia. Yet, this conversation has generalised street art and identified it as a singular form with identical styles and objectives throughout the region. Street art's purpose is, however, defined by the socio-cultural circumstances of its production. Middle Eastern artists thus adopt distinctive methods in creating their individual work and responding to their individual environments. Here, in this new book, Sabrina De Turk employs rigorous visual analysis to explore the diversity of Middle Eastern street art and uses case studies of countries as varied as Egypt, Tunisia, Lebanon, Palestine, Bahrain and Oman to illustrate how geographic specifics impact upon its function and aesthetic. Her book will be of significant interest to scholars specialising in art from the Middle East and North Africa and those who bring an interdisciplinary perspective to Middle East studies."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

Behan's friends and relatives, and people in his literary circle, have claimed he was not a prolific letter-writer. Even Behan himself has been "ed as saying, "Whoever writes my biography will get no help from my letters. I never write any." But in fact there is a substantial body of letters to and from Behan, who not only corresponded with seventeen periodicals but wrote to relatives, friends, IRA colleagues, civil servants, theatrical directors, publicans, and complete strangers. As in the case of Oscar Wilde, the search for Behan's letters has been hampered by their dispersal to widely scattered and unexpected places. The surviving letters that Mikhail was able to locate, however, proved well worth the trouble it took to uncover them. In addition to providing a vital record of one of the giants of Irish literature, Behan's letters -- especially those written without thought of publication -- give a far better sense of his exuberant verbal style than his plays or poetry. Mikhail introduces each letter and explains the circumstances in which it was written. He also annotates the letters, elucidating difficulties, noting the location and ownership of the letters whenever possible, and giving biographical information about the correspondents. The Letters of Brendan Behan also includes four poems that appear here for the first time, as well as extracts from early writings never before published. Numerous letters to editors, refused publication because of their outspokenness, are published here for the first time, and others, previously cut or censored, now appear in their original form. For anyone interested in Irish literature or contemporary drama -- and especially for readers and scholars of Behan's work -- The Letters of Brendan Behan is an invaluable collection.
