L'étude de la cité antique de Aradi (aujourd'hui Sidi Jdidi, gros village de l'arrière pays de Hammamet) en Tunisie, représentative des agglomérations africaines de la fin de l'Antiquité, permet d'illustrer la christianisation architecturale des petites cités.Après un premier volume dans lequel ont été exposés les résultats de la fouille d’une première basilique chrétienne de la cité, ce deuxième volume s’attache à restituer l’image de son groupe épiscopal. Au moment de sa genèse, au cours du premier quart du Ve siècle, il était composé selon le principe de la «cathédrale double», complété d’un îlot dont les équipements domestiques servaient à la fonction caritative de l’Église. Un quatrième îlot contenait peut-être la demeure de l’évêque. Comme la basilique sud étudiée naguère, l’histoire du groupe épiscopal connut une césure brutale dans la deuxième moitié du Ve siècle. Elle peut être mise en rapport avec la persécution des rois vandales. À l’époque byzantine, la reconstruction montre une rétraction de l’emprise antérieure et la disparition de la fonction d’assistance. Mais si dans le premier état la cathédrale de cette petite cité répondait aux critères de la grande architecture chrétienne, dans le second, à sa mesure, elle en appliquait encore les principes en donnant un cadre prestigieux à la fonction martyrologique.

To all those who witnessed his extraordinary conquests, from Albania to India, Alexander the Great appeared invincible. How Alexander himself promoted this appearance-how he abetted the belief that he enjoyed divine favor and commanded even the forces of nature against his enemies-is the subject of Frank L.
