For their rigorous and loving determination, for the tireless and patient research, Siza's houses offer us an exemplary lesson of intellectual greatness. The houses shown here were designed and built over a period of time of fifty years, beginning with the four houses in Matosinhos and up to the present day, with the house in Majorca currently under construction. Such an array of houses constitues, for a single architect, an authentic field of research, where continuità allows a specific reflection and at the same time a more general one on the theme itself and on architecture. The subject of this book is the single-family house in the work of Alvaro Siza. This is a well-defined and very significant theme within the context of Siza's production, although it has never before been presented and studied in a systematic manner. The interest of this volume, then, is rooted in the clarity of the selection, limited only to single-family houses, in an attempt to fill what appears to us to be a gap.

Over the past quarter of a century, the wave of construction of “new villages” has profoundly changed the landscapes of the Ile-de-France region. After two decades of production of large collective housing estates, the single-family home has experienced strong development in response to the desire of households to own larger and more comfortable housing. Who were the customers of these new suburban spaces? What have been the effects of this supply of housing on the fringes of the city on the social development of the centre of the agglomeration? While executives and middle classes have settled in the best-served sectors, the Ile-de-France countryside has also welcomed more modest households leaving the neighbourhoods of large housing estates that are increasingly devalued. Through the constitution of these suburban suburban rings, it is therefore the evolution of a metropolis of more than 10 million inhabitants that we questioned. Maps and graphics reproduced in a CD-ROM highlight the increase in social polarization as well as mobility and help to shed light on the debates on the emerging city.

Brussels housing is extremely diverse, as anyone walking around the city will readily appreciate. Its traditional urban block consists of single-family terraced houses, usually two to three storeys high and with a garden at the rear. Here, this bourgeois housing type evolved into a particularly broad range - including the well-known Art Nouveau residences - and still forms the "DNA" of the city. Today, many other housing forms have emerged there; thus, Brussels' residential building types comprise narrow gabled-roofed houses standing side by side with modernist appartment buildings, 19th-century mansions, and brand new condominiums. This typical Belgian layering of housing solutions makes for a visually poetic chaos, creating at times a surreal scenery but also providing answers for the challenges of housing design. The three chapters of this publication explore Brussels' housing typologies from the origins to the present day. More than 100 selected case studies are documented with scaled drawings and photographs. The works by photographer Maxime Delvaux trace a promenade comprising an expressive journey through the Belgian capital and its varied cityscapes. The book offers a broad panorama and a history of the architecture and urban development of Brussels.

The case study house program (1945 - 1966) was an exceptional, innovative event in the history of American architecture and remains to this day unique. The program, which concentrated on the Los Angeles area and oversaw the design of 36 prototype homes, sought to make available plans for modern residences that could be easily and cheaply constructed during the postwar building boom. The program's chief motivating force was Arts & Architecture editor John Entenza, a champion of modernism who had all the right connections to attract some of architecture's greatest talents, such as Richard Neutra, Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen. Highly experimental, the program generated houses that were designed to redefine the modern home and thus had a pronounced influence on architecture - American and international - both during the program's existence and even to this day.
