This volume is the first full-length study of penthos (tears of contrition) since Hausherr's in 1944. It traces its exposition in the early eastern Christian tradition, through detailed analysis of Greek and Syriac texts by Klimakos, Ephrem, Isaac and Symeon the New Theologian. It suggests why such weeping is, for these writers, a joyful as well as a sobering experience, and it places their writings in their historical and geographical context, giving some lexicographical background. Issues of religious anthropology, and the unusual choice of a female exegete in the person of the 'sinful woman' (Luke 7.36-50) are considered. The conclusion points the way to an appropriate theological interpretation of these teachings and highlights modern, non-monastic examples of joy-bearing, penitent grief.

Through this Handbook of Patristic Exegesis , the reader will obtain a balanced and cohesive picture of the Early Church. It gives an overall view of the reception, transmission, and interpretation of the Bible in the life and thought of the Church during the first five centuries of Christianity, the so-called patristic era. The handbook offers the context and presuppositions necessary for understanding the development of the interpretative traditions of the Early Church, in its catechesis, its liturgy and as a foundation of its systems of theology. The handbook presents a comprehensive overview of the history of patristic exegesis. Apart from a general introduction to the major topics in this field, it contains essays by leading patristic scholars on the most important Church Fathers, such as Augustine, Irenaeus, Origen, Gregory of Nyssa, and others. The essays are supplemented by bibliographies of editions and studies on patristic exegesis published from 1945 until 1995. Veel van onze tradities hebben hun wortels in de Middeleeuwen. Zo ontstonden in deze tijd de volkstalige literatuur, de universiteit, de parlementaire vertegenwoordiging en de boekdrukkunst. In Een kennismaking met de middeleeuwse wereld geeft de auteur een overzicht van dit tijdperk. Het overzicht begint bij de volksverhuizingen in de vijfde eeuw en loopt door tot omstreeks 1500. Het boek bestaat uit vijf hoofdstukken. In elk hoofdstuk vormt de politieke geschiedenis het vertrekpunt. Vervolgens komen sociaal-economische en culturele onderwerpen uitgebreid aan bod. Landbouw, nijverheid en handel worden besproken naast godsdienst, intellectuele geschiedenis en literatuur. Achter in het boek is een glossarium opgenomen. Hierin staat de uitleg van de vaktermen en andere begrippen die in het boek voorkomen. Ook staan achter in het boek overzichtelijke lijsten van pausen en koningen van Frankrijk, Duitsland en Engeland die in de Middeleeuwen hebben geregeerd. Het boek bevat nog tien afzonderlijke beschouwingen van diverse specialisten. Deze teksten vormen een waardevolle aanvulling op de hoofdtekst omdat ze dieper ingaan op bepaalde aspecten van de stof en laten zien welke onderwerpen in het hedendaagse onderzoek centraal staan. De beschouwingen bespreken bijvoorbeeld de positie van de vrouw, conflictoplossing en de verschriftelijking van de middeleeuwse cultuur.
