Abstract

Focus on Alternative and Complementary Therapies (FACT) is a review journal aiming to present the evidence on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in an analytical and impartial manner. The journal contains summaries and commentaries on key CAM areas, articles that review the evidence for and against CAM in a particular therapeutic area, interviews, editorials, news and book reviews. Tables of contents are available from 1996. Full-text is available to subscibers. A sample copy is available. FACT is edited by staff of the Complementary Medicine unit at the Peninsula Medical School in Exeter, and is published by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Pharmaceutical Press.

Abstract

This book aims to equip the reader to make optimal decisions on the use of mechanical ventilatory support in critically ill cancer patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF) and to implement the different strategies effectively. Detailed information is provided on the rationale for invasive and non-invasive ventilation, the different modes of ventilation, indications and contraindications, prognostic factors, and outcomes. The role of postoperative mechanical ventilation following various forms of surgery is extensively addressed, and key aspects of withdrawal from ventilatory support are discussed. Attention is also devoted to mechanical ventilation in the palliative care context. The concluding part of the book focuses on healthcare resource utilization and organizational support in cancer critical care. ARF is the most common reason for hospital and intensive care admission among oncological patients, and there is growing evidence that outcome following mechanical ventilation is improving. Readers will find this book to be an invaluable aid when selecting and executing a strategy for management of ARF in individual cancer patients.

Abstract

Mechanisms and standards exist to safeguard the health and welfare of the patient, but for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)-used to treat depression and other mental illnesses-such approval methods have failed. Prescribed to thousands over the years, public relations as opposed to medical trials have paved the way for this popular yet dangerous and controversial treatment option. Doctors of Deception is a revealing history of ECT (or shock therapy) in the United States, told here for the first time. Through the examination of court records, medical data, FDA reports, industry claims, her own experience as a patient of shock therapy, and the stories of others, Andre exposes tactics used by the industry to promote ECT as a responsible treatment when all the scientific evidence suggested otherwise. As early as the 1940's, scientific literature began reporting incidences of human and animal brain damage resulting from ECT. Despite practitioner modifications, deleterious effects on memory and cognition persisted. Rather than discontinue use of ECT, the

Abstract

Provides simple but elegant solutions for becoming a more effective therapist. Redirects our attention from specific treatments to our behavior and attitudes as therapists, offering a refreshing look at improving treatment that operates outside the contemporary solution of providing the "right psychological treatment for the right disorder." Emphasizes the therapist and the therapist's contribution to patient well-being, extending the usual solutions provided in graduate education and challenging therapists in two important ways: 1) requires therapists to systematically monitor their clients' treatment response and the therapeutic alliance (as rated by the client) and to discuss these phenomena with the client and 2) therapists must examine their effectiveness over time and use this information to become more effective. The discourse is on the one hand highly personal, anecdotal, passionate, and persuasive, and on the other, evidence-based.

Abstract

This book, part of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine textbook series, provides detailed up-to-date information on the physical, cognitive, and psychological impairments that are frequently present following a stay in an intensive care unit and examines in depth the available preventive and therapeutic strategies, including adapted rehabilitation programs. Beyond acquainting readers with the multiple facets of post-intensive care syndrome (PICS), the book aims to promote the effective follow-up of patients, thereby enhancing their ability to work and their functional autonomy, and to identify risk factors for the development of PICS as a stimulus to beneficial organizational changes in intensive care departments. The background to the book is the realization by healthcare providers that the quality of life of patients who have required a stay in an intensive care unit can be severely impaired or even become unacceptable. All too often, the diverse sequelae are overlooked by specialists of other disciplines. Moreover, families and caregivers are also at high risk of post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. The European Society of Intensive Care Medicine has developed the Lessons from the ICU series with the vision of providing focused and state-of-the-art overviews of central topics in Intensive Care and optimal resources for clinicians working in Intensive Care. This book, written by renowned experts in the field, will facilitate the transmission of key knowledge with significant clinical and financial benefits.
