Abstract

Abstract

In this book, "Asian Organized Crime and the Anglosphere," the author uncovers the multifaceted phenomenon of Asian Organized Crime (AOC) and its profound impact on nation-states, with particular emphasis on English-speaking countries. From the United States and Canada, to the United Kingdom, to Australia and New Zealand; each chapter delves into the intricate dynamics and transnational operations of Asian criminal groups. The book explores the diverse responses and strategies employed by these countries, shedding light on the categories of AOC, ranging from traditional criminal activities rooted in Asian countries to high-tech transnational crimes that have rapidly expanded into Western nations. Readers will gain insights into the presence and impact of prominent Asian criminal groups operating within the Anglosphere. Focusing on national and homeland security implications, this book equips professionals, students, practitioners, and academics with the knowledge to understand, counter, and combat Asian organized crime.

Abstract

This essay takes an inter-American and transpacific look at historical processes of discrimination and exclusion of free Chinese migrants in the Americas from the sixteenth to the twentieth century. The analysis of the correlation between migration, liberalism and racism will allow us to gain a better understanding of the situations of discrimination faced by Asian immigrants and others considered as “non-Whites” in the United States, Europe and other parts of the world. Today, this issue is once again gaining relevance, particularly in light of the xenophobic and anti-Chinese reactions that have arisen with the coronavirus pandemic.

Abstract

Learning at a distance and learning online are growing in scale and importance in higher education, presenting opportunities for large scale, inclusive, flexible and engaging learning. These modes of learning swept the world in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The many challenges of providing effective education online and remotely have been acknowledged, particularly by those who rapidly jumped into online and distance education during the crisis. This volume, edited by the University of London's Centre for Online and Distance Education, addresses the practice and theory of online and distance education, building on knowledge and expertise developed in the University over some 150 years. The University is currently providing distance transnational education to around 50,000 students in more than 180 countries around the world. Throughout the book, contributors explore important principles and highlight successful practices in areas including course design and pedagogy, online assessment, open education, inclusive practice, and enabling student voice. Case studies illustrate prominent issues and approaches. Together, the chapters offer current and future leaders and practitioners a practical, productive, practice- and theory-informed account of the present and likely future state of online and distance higher education worldwide.
