The Journal of the Text Encoding Initiative is the official journal of the Text Encoding Initiative consortium. It publishes the proceedings of the annual TEI Conference and Members' Meeting and special thematic issues: reports on electronic textual editing, current trends in TEI encoding, and new use cases for TEI. It furthermore provides a forum for articles on the discussion of the interface between the TEI and other communities, and more generally of the role of technological standards in the digital humanities, including digital scholarly editing, linguistic analysis, corpora creation, and newer areas such as mass digitization, semantic web research, and editing within virtual worlds.

This volume contains the papers presented at the 13th International Symposium on String Processing and Information Retrieval (SPIRE), held October 11-13, 2006, in Glasgow, Scotland. The SPIRE annual symposium provides an opportunity for both new and established researchers to present original contributions to areas such as string processing (dictionary algorithms, text searching, pattern matching, text c- pression, text mining, natural language processing, and automata-based string processing); information retrieval languages, applications, and evaluation (IR modelling, indexing, ranking and ?ltering, interface design, visualization, cro- lingual IR systems, multimedia IR, digital libraries, collaborative retrieval, W- related applications, XML, information retrieval from semi-structured data, text mining, and generation of structured data from text); and interaction of biology and computation (sequencing and applications in molecular biology, evolution and phylogenetics, recognition of genes and regulatory elements, and sequen- driven protein structure prediction). The papers in this volume were selected from 102 papers submitted from over 20 di?erent countries in response to the Call for Papers. A total of 26 submissions were accepted as full papers, yielding an acceptance rate of about 25%. In view of the large number of good-quality submissions the Program Committee decided to accept 5 short papers, that have also been included in the proceedings. SPIRE 2006 also featured two talks by invited speakers: Jamie Callan (Carnegie Mellon University, USA) and Martin Farach-Colton (Rutgers University, USA).

Derived from contributions to the Workshop on pen and touch technology on education (WIPTTE) in 2015, this edited volume highlights recent developments for pen and tablet research within the education system with a particular focus on hardware and software developments, comprising the perspectives of teachers, school and university administrators, and researchers for educators at every level. Split into six distinct parts, the book explores topics like how classrooms are increasingly using sketch-based videos, created by teachers and students alike, and how the teaching of key skills such as literacy, languages, math, and art via pen and touch technologies within the classroom are leading to improvements in engagement, learning, and retention levels amongst students. Future perspectives of digital learning, as envisioned by current high school students, are also explored. Revolutionizing Education with Digital Ink is a must-read for those seeking to understand the direction of current and future pen and touch research, its current use in classrooms, and future research directions

CICLing 2008 (www. CICLing. org) was the 9th Annual Conference on Intel- gent Text Processing and Computational Linguistics. The CICLing conferences are intended to provide a wide-scope forum for the discussion of both the art and craft of natural language processing research and the best practices in its applications. This volume contains the papers accepted for oral presentation at the c- ference, as well as several of the best papers accepted for poster presentation. Other papers accepted for poster presentationwerepublished in specialissues of other journals(seethe informationonthe website). Since 2001the CICLing p- ceedings have been published in Springer’s Lecture Notes in Computer Science series, as volumes 2004, 2276, 2588, 2945, 3406, 3878, and 4394. The book consists of 12 sections, representative of the main tasks and app- cations of Natural Language Processing: – Language resources – Morphology and syntax – Semantics and discourse – Word sense disambiguation and named entity recognition – Anaphora and co-reference – Machine translation and parallel corpora – Natural language generation – Speech recognition – Information retrieval and question answering – Text classi?cation – Text summarization – Spell checking and authoring aid A total of 204 papers by 438 authors from 39 countries were submitted for evaluation (see Tables 1 and 2). Each submission was reviewed by at least two independent Program Committee members. This volume contains revised v- sions of 52 papers by 129 authors from 24 countries selected for inclusion in the conference program (the acceptance rate was 25. 5%).
