Abstract

"This volume uses an ecosystem approach to explore the idea and potential of the Allied Youth Fields-an aspirational term that suggests increased connection, alignment, and complementarity across the multiple systems in which adults engage with young people. This is an opportune time for this volume, as recent research and initiatives make a strong case for what developmentalists have argued for decades: A young person's learning and development is shaped in positive and negative ways by both the simple and the sustained interactions they have with all the adults in their life. We suggest that the concept of learning and development ecosystems-when taken more seriously than it is typically used-offers a promising way to holistically consider the systems, people, practices, and policies that matter for young people's equitable learning and development. Through this book we hope to seed a paradigm shift in how out-of-school time is thought of; specifically, we seek to expand the notion of out-of-school time to include the multiple systems in which adults work and young people spend time both within and outside of the traditional school classroom"--

"This book examines after-school programs in light of their explosive growth in recent years. In the rush to mount programs, there is a danger of promoting weak ones of little value and failing to implement strong ones adequately. But what is quality and how can it be achieved? This book presents findings from an intensive study of three after-school centers that differed dramatically in quality. Drawing from 233 site visits, the authors examine how - and why - young people thrive in good programs and suffer in weak ones. The book features engaging, in-depth case studies of each of the three centers and of six youths, two from each center. Written in a highly accessible style for academics, youth workers, after-school program leaders, and policy makers, the study breaks new ground in highlighting the importance of factors such as collective mentoring, synergies among different programs and activities, and organizational culture and practices. Abstract

A publication to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of PROFITHEATRE at the Faculty of Informatics of the Masaryk University. On its 120 colour pages, it describes individual plays and memories of the audience. The anthology is dedicated to the memory of professor Ludvík Kundera who helped the theatre with dramaturgy in its early stages. It also contains many photographs which show the no longer existing premises of the faculty (pages 19-22) that vanished during its reconstruction. Perhaps the most appealing feature of the anthology is its humorous tone where students' pranks mix with the nostalgia of the long gone. However, the anthology also includes controversial critical reviews of certain plays. An appendix with two latest plays has also been published in a limited number of copies and in the same square design as the anthology. The appendix is dedicated to the memory of Vendula Borůvková.
