The year 2021 saw the publication of the Special Issue "Diseases of the Salivary Glands" (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/jcm/special_issues/Salivary_Glands), Part I, covering recent and novel advancements as well as future trends in the field of research evaluating diagnostic and therapeutic treatment of salivary gland (SGs) diseases. Given the enormous success of Part I, the Special Issue "Diseases of the Salivary Glands" Part II has been launched, with the firm belief that it will enrich the panorama of world research in this field. Topics include: 1 Clinical features and presentation of potentially malignant SG disorders; 2 Risk factors and etiopathogenesis of SGs tumors; 3 Etiopathogenesis and molecular mechanisms involved in the chronic inflammatory condition characterizing Sjӧgren's syndrome; 4 New discoveries in the field of micro RNAs associated with Sjӧgren's syndrome; 5 Molecular markers linked to development and progression of SG diseases: current knowledge and future implications; 6 More innovative techniques for the study of the SG diseases: current limitations and future directions.

The Second Edition of The Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology, like the First Edition, represents a collaborative effort by a multidisciplinary group of cytopathologists, surgical pathologists, molecular pathologists, radiologists, and head and neck surgeons. This international group shares the goal of creating a practical and uniform reporting system for salivary gland fine needle aspiration (FNA). This book is organized into six general diagnostic categories: “Non-Diagnostic,” “Non-Neoplastic,” “Atypia of Undetermined Significance (AUS),” “Neoplasm: Benign,” “Neoplasm: Salivary Gland Neoplasm of Uncertain Malignant Potential (SUMP),” “Suspicious for Malignancy,” and “Malignant.” It includes definitions, morphologic criteria, and explanations for each of the diagnostic categories. Specific chapters are dedicated to the application of the latest available ancillary studies, radiologic features of salivary gland lesions, clinical management, and histological considerations including updates from the most recent 5th Edition WHO blue book. The Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology 2nd Edition represents an essential step towards increasing the overall effectiveness of salivary gland FNA and fostering better communication between clinicians and between institutions to improve overall patient care.

This book details how, over the last 25 years, ultrasound examination as become an indispensable means of diagnosing salivary pathology. It presents the new machines equipped with high-frequency probes which now allow a real approach to the pathology and give a macro-photography of the tumor. Doppler ultrasonography can identify vascularization on inflammatory and tumoral processes, and ultrasound elastography now gives new details and helps judge whether tumors are benign or malignant. This book is a step-by-step guide describing best practices, from handling the probe and placing it on the salivary gland to diagnostic imaging, from infection and chronic diseases to cysts and tumors. Aimed at radiologists, ENT specialists, and maxillofacial surgeons, this book points out how the most inexpensive examination can yield maximum detail if carried out thoroughly.

This wide-ranging guide to dry mouth, or xerostomia, is intended to meet the needs of dentists by providing information on all clinically relevant aspects. After introductory discussion of salivary secretion and function, the potential causes of dry mouth, including diseases affecting saliva production, drugs and irradiation, are examined. Symptoms and signs such as altered taste, bacterial changes and infection are discussed and impacts on quality of life, described. Diagnostic issues are fully explored, covering the use of clinical scoring scales, difficulties in assessment, detection of early signs and the role of salivary biomarkers. The full range of treatment options and preventive measures is then described, including the use of intensity-modulated radiotherapy to spare salivary function, the value of artificial salivas and the beneficial effects of regular chewing. The book closes by considering future treatment avenues and the potential for salivary gland regeneration.
