Abstract

This book brings awareness to a neglected condition that is nevertheless prevalent world-wide. Much focus is justly given to pulmonary tuberculosis, one of the key medical scourges of humanity, but this disease also often manifests itself in organs outside of the lungs. There is however a surprising lack of information available on extrapulmonary TB, which this book aims to remedy. Specifically, research, as well as epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment options, are discussed in detail by an international list of experts. This comprehensive product serves as a valuable resource to numerous fields of medicine due to the presence of extrapulmonary tuberculosis throughout the human body. .

Abstract

Almost exactly ten years ago, two young physicians joined me at the University of Oklahoma for the study of dermatopathology: Stephen C. Somach, a brilliant dermatologist-scholar from Cleveland, who was also a highly accomplished cellist, and Michael B. Morgan, an effervescent, newly minted pathologist from Florida, who was brimming with energy, curiosity, and zeal and was also spo- ing water skiis and a red Porsche! Bruce R. Smoller, whose impressive erudition is universally acknowledged, I met during a Residency Review committee visit to Stanford some ?fteen years ago. Each of these men has made original cont- butions to the dermatopathology literature as well as to patient care in the cli- cal setting. Their publications have broadened our understanding of the biologic behavior of pigmented lesions, cutaneous lymphomas, vascular lesions, and soft tissue tumors. It is indeed a pleasure to welcome their volume, Deadly Der- tologic Diseases, a unique and stimulating outcome of their enthusiastic collaboration. Deadly Dermatologic Diseases discusses a wide variety of entities–neoplastic, vascular, infectious, metabolic–each of which may eventuate in death of the patient. In addition, numerous tumors and dermatoses frequently associated with internal malignancies are reviewed. High-quality histologic photomic- graphs and clinical pictures accompany many of the discussions. A unique initial summary page facilitates the reading of each presentation. Recent relevant genetic and biochemical ? ndings in every chapter were particularly helpful to this reader.

Abstract

This clinically oriented book covers selected infections of the central nervous system which are of considerable current interest. Aspects that are less well documented, such as spinal cord infections, central nervous system infections in patients with cancer, tropical infections, healthcare-associated ventriculitis or meningitis, and immunological problems in the international traveler are also discussed, as these are all problems relevant to daily practice.   CNS Infections: A Clinical Approach is of value to the busy clinician; the neurological international community as well as all primary care doctors, internal medicine specialists, and residents who take care of patients with suspected neurological infections. .

Abstract

As the number of surviving immune suppressed patients continues to rise, skin manifestations of patients have become increasingly important. AIDS patients, and renal, heart, liver, bone marrow, and lung transplant patients are now living longer and immunosuppressive drugs are being used more frequently. Diabetes is rising in the US and around the world, offering its own unique brand of immune suppressed skin diseases.  The skin may be the earliest sign of these conditions and be the organ showing the most profound, earliest, and treatment limiting side effects.   Skin Diseases in the Immunocompromised is the most comprehensive book on the topic available. It  elucidates the signs of immune suppressed skin diseases to afford early diagnosis and management of this ever-increasing diverse group of illnesses. Organized for easy access, this book will be an essential resource for residents and fellows in dermatology and infectious diseases medical professionals.

Abstract

This volume explores the nexus of manifestations of hematopathology and dermatopathology and provides a novel compartmental(epidermal, dermal, subcutaneous) -based framework to approach a diagnosis that considers both pseudolymphomatous and lymphomatous patterns. Through photographs, tables, and text, the book illustrates the range of non-neoplastic hematologic disorders and their neoplastic counterparts in skin: reactive patterns of infectious etiology and immune responses that simulate cutaneous lymphomas. The epidemiology, pathobiology, clinical and immuno-histopathologic manifestations in skin as well as the approach to diagnosis, selection and algorithmic interpretation of tests, and prognosis are also described.   Written by experts in the field, Cutaneous Hematopathology: Approach to the Diagnosis of Atypical Lymphoid-Hematopoietic Infiltrates in Skin is a comprehensive resource that is of great value to surgical pathologists, hematopathologists, dermatopathologists, residents and fellows, community dermatologists, oncologists and infectious disease practitioners.

Abstract

The type I interferon (IFN) signaling pathway is well recognized as a pathway activated by viral infections. It is activated by a variety of microbial pattern recognition receptors including the Toll-like receptors, NOD-like receptors and several cytosolic receptors. Activation of the type I IFN pathway leads to the production of both antiviral factors and products that influence immune cell function. More recently it has been shown that bacteria are also capable of activating this pathway. Bacterial Activation of Type I Interferons reviews both the current understanding of how different bacterial species are able to activate this pathway as well as the influence type I IFNs have on the outcome to infection. Several different bacterial species are covered, spanning Gram positive and Gram negative, intracellular, extracellular, and different host infection sites. An introduction to the pathogenesis of each organism is provided, and the signaling molecules involved in the activation of the type I IFN pathway and the role it plays in animal infection models are also covered.

Abstract

This book provides a survey of recent advances in the development of antibiofilm agents for clinical and environmental applications. The fact that microbes exist in structured communities called biofilms has slowly become accepted within the medical community. We now know that over 80% of all infectious diseases are biofilm-related; however, significant challenges still lie in our ability to diagnose and treat these extremely recalcitrant infections. Written by experts from around the globe, this book offers a valuable resource for medical professionals seeking to treat biofilm-related disease, academic and industry researchers interested in drug discovery, and instructors who teach courses on microbial pathogenesis and medical microbiology.

Abstract

This book reviews the role of each cell subset in the skin, providing the basics for understanding skin immunology and the mechanisms of skin diseases. The skin is one of the immune organs and is continually exposed to foreign antigens and external stimuli that must be monitored and characterized for possible elimination. Upon exposure to foreign antigens, the skin can elicit a variety of immune responses in harmony with skin components that include keratinocytes, dendritic cell subsets, mast cells, basophils, fibroblasts, macrophages, gamma-delta T cells, neutrophils, myeloid-derived suppressor cells, vascular and lymphatic cells, hair follicles, platelets, and adipose tissues, among others. In the past 10 years, knowledge of immunology has expanded drastically in areas such as innate immunity (Toll-like receptors, C-type lectins), and host defenses to bacteria and viruses, and this increased knowledge has led to the development of more effective treatment of psoriasis and other skin diseases. This book provides updates on the mechanisms of skin diseases including contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, urticaria, drug eruption, bullous diseases, anaphylaxis, graft-versus-host disease, rosacea, lymphoma, photodermatology, and collagen vascular diseases. Understanding the basics of skin immunology will help clinicians and dermatologists use new therapeutics such as biologics efficiently. Serving as an intermediary between basic science and clinical medicine, this book gives readers the opportunity to understand and marvel at the mystery and fascination of skin immunology.

Abstract

This book provides comprehensive coverage of the current and emerging management of prostatitis, from diagnosis to therapy. It addresses all clinical aspects of the prostatitis syndrome and equips the reader with all the information needed to offer a tailored therapy. Furthermore, clinical implications of the disease are analyzed and discussed, with particular attention to andrological complications (infertility) and the possible link between prostatitis and prostate cancer. Special consideration is also given to contemporary aspects of prostatitis management relating to antibiotic stewardship and elevated PSA, bearing in mind that thoughtless treatment of prostatitis represents malpractice and sometimes even a forensic issue. The final chapter comprising questions and answers will be valuable for quick consultation in everyday clinical practice. This book will be a truly practical guide for physicians involved in the diagnostic work-up and treatment of patients suspected of having prostatitis and will also serve as a ready source of information for all physicians who occasionally see prostatitis patients.
