In the last decade there was a widespread use of 3D ultrasound in obstetrical imaging. It is estimated that more than half of the obstetrical clinics are currently using ultrasound equipment with 3D capabilities. Initially known for its beautiful images of the faces of babies, 3D ultrasound has, however, become an important tool in prenatal diagnosis for its ability to image fetal organs in normal and abnormal conditions. This book is a state-of-the-art work conceived as a practical guide to the application of 3D ultrasound in obstetrics. The book is illustrated with images reflecting the clinical utility of 3D ultrasound in prenatal diagnosis. The book has three sections: one section on the technical principles of 3D ultrasound, a second section on various 3D rendering tools with a step-by-step explanation of its use. The third section is dedicated to the clinical use of 3D in the examination of the fetal organs. The authors of this book have extensive expertise in 3D ultrasound that spans for more than 15 years.

Since the late nineteenth century, medicine has sought to foster the birth of healthy children by attending to the bodies of pregnant women, through what we have come to call prenatal care. Women, and not their unborn children, were the initial focus of that medical attention, but prenatal diagnosis in its present form, which couples scrutiny of the fetus with the option to terminate pregnancy, came into being in the early 1970s. Tangled Diagnoses examines the multiple consequences of the widespread diffusion of this medical innovation. Prenatal testing, Ilana Löwy argues, has become mainly a risk-management technology-the goal of which is to prevent inborn impairments, ideally through the development of efficient therapies but in practice mainly through the prevention of the birth of children with such impairments. Using scholarship, interviews, and direct observation in France and Brazil of two groups of professionals who play an especially important role in the production of knowledge about fetal development-fetopathologists and clinical geneticists-to expose the real-life dilemmas prenatal testing creates, this book will be of interest to anyone concerned with the sociopolitical conditions of biomedical innovation, the politics of women's bodies, disability, and the ethics of modern medicine.

This updated book is a practical guide to intrapartum ultrasonography to help practitioners improve labor and delivery, and to limit, where possible, complications. Presenting the authors’ experiences, the book summarizes the state of the art in normal and abnormal labor. It clearly documents the use of intrapartum ultrasonography to evaluate the first and second stages of labor and diagnose the occiput posterior and transverse positions. Each situation is analyzed with the help of numerous informative images and invaluable tips and tricks showing how fetal head engagement and progression can be documented objectively. The importance of ultrasound in obstetrics risk management is also addressed. Explaining how intrapartum ultrasonography can be used to assess whether a safe natural delivery is likely or whether operative procedures are required, the book is a valuable resource for all professionals – physicians and midwifes alike – caring for women in labor.

This book offers an essential guide for postgraduates, obstetricians and gynaecologists (including teaching faculty), helping them develop workflows for the early detection and assessment of high-risk pregnancies & pregnancy with IUGR using colour Doppler applications and transfontenellar cranial sonography in premature new-borns during routine ultrasonography. This book familiarizes practicing radiologists and Ob-Gyn specialists with this aspect of sonography, so as to improve perinatal outcomes.

This structured dynamic book outlines, step by step, an evidence-based systematic approach to the sonographic evaluation of the pelvis in women with suspected endometriosis. This “how to” guide is intended for those with basic ultrasonography skills who want to further develop their capabilities in performing the relevant sonographic techniques to identify endometriosis. Detailed schematics, and corresponding high-resolution ultrasound images and intuitive videos support readers in expanding their technical skills and bridging the gaps in their knowledge of endometriosis ultrasound. The International Deep Endometriosis Analysis (IDEA) group consensus statement was the culmination of the work of 29 authors from 5 continents. With the publication of How to Perform Ultrasonography in Endometriosis the authors intend to provide the basis for quality improvement and benchmarking of ultrasound in the world of endometriosis. This book not only offers sonologists, radiologists and sonographers valuable insights into the field of endometriosis ultrasound, but also enables them to develop their practical skills in assessing women with chronic pelvic pain.

This book clearly explains the basics of cranial ultrasonography in the neonate, from patient preparation through to screening strategies and the classification of abnormalities. The aim is to enable the reader consistently to obtain images of the highest quality and to interpret them correctly. Essential information is provided both on the procedure itself and on the normal ultrasound anatomy. The standard technique is described and illustrated, and emphasis is placed on the value of supplementary acoustic windows. Attention is also drawn to maturational changes in the neonatal brain and to the limitations of cranial ultrasonography. Frequently occurring abnormalities are described and classifications for these abnormalities are provided. A new classification for neonatal cerebellar hemorrhages is introduced. In this third edition, all ultrasound images have beena replaced, reflecting the improvements in image quality. An entirely new chapter is devoted to Doppler ultrasonography. The illustrations have been improved and new illustrations were added. The reader will have access to highly informative videos on the cranial ultrasound procedure, available online via SpringerLink. The compact design of the book makes it an ideal and handy reference that will guide the novice in understanding the essentials of the technique while also providing useful information for the more experienced practitioner.

The second edition of Doppler Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology has been expanded and comprehensively updated to present the current standards of practice in Doppler ultrasound and the most recent developments in the technology. Doppler Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology encompasses the full spectrum of clinical applications of Doppler ultrasound for the practicing obstetrician-gynecologist, including the latest advances in 3D and color Doppler and the newest techniques in 4D fetal echocardiography. Written by preeminent experts in the field, the book covers the basic and physical principles of Doppler ultrasound; the use of Doppler for fetal examination, including fetal cerebral circulation; Doppler echocardiography of the fetal heart; and the use of Doppler for postdated pregnancy and in cases of multiple gestation. Chapters on the use of Doppler for gynecologic investigation include ultrasound in ectopic pregnancy, for infertility, for benign disorders and for gynecologic malignancies. With more than 500 illustrations, including over 150 in color, this book is a must-have reference for all practicing obstetrician-gynecologists, radiologists and sonographers who are interested in maternal-fetal Doppler sonography.
