Models and concepts of brain function have always been guided and limited by the available techniques and data. This book brings together a multitude of data from different backgrounds. It addresses questions such as: how do different brain areas interact in the process of channelling information? How do neuronal populations encode the information? How are networks formed and separated or associated with other networks? The authors present data at the single cell level both in vitro and in vivo, at the neuronal population level in vivo comparing field potentials (EEGs) in different brain areas, and also present data from spike recordings from identified neuronal populations during the performance of different tasks. Written for academic researchers and graduate students, the book strives to cover the range of single cell activity analysis to the observation of network activity, and finally to brain area activity and cognitive processes of the brain.

Adhesive interactions are important for cell trafficking, differentiation, function and tissue formation. In the nervous system, many cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) are involved in migration of neuroblasts, outgrowth and fasciculation of neuronal processes, formation of synapses and rearrangements of synaptic contacts associated with plasticity including learning and memory. More than eighty CAMs were found to be localized at synaptic sites, where they in a regulated manner bridge pre- and postsynaptic specializations thereby modulating synaptic function. Structure and Function of the Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule NCAM describes recent developments concerning structural, functional and possible therapeutic aspects of one particular CAM, the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM). NCAM is one of the first identified and most studied CAMs, and this book is the first attempt to collectively summarize our current knowledge of this important cell adhesion molecule.

This book focuses on the intersection between cell cycle regulation and embryo development. Sex matters! Are there differences between the sexes when it comes to brain function and the behaviours that result? This volume attempts to answer this fundamental question. If the answer is ‘yes’ then this should impact upon our approach to treating mental illness in humans, and to modelling it in animals, as we look for aetiological and pharmacological solutions. This volume covers two main aspects of research into sex differences in psychopharmacology: preclinical research, and clinical work in this area. The first part of the volume deals with the preclinical research, and explains how male and female animals differ in their sexual behaviour, drug dependence, cognition, genetics and stress reactivity, with an introductory chapter explaining basic mechanisms of sex steroid action in the body and brain. The second part focuses on the importance of improved understanding of sex differences in our approach to the treatment of psychiatric illness.
