Abstract

The topic of diffusion science becomes more and more important: this collection of timely papers is divided into seven chapters. The first three are dedicated to macroscopic and microscopic theories of diffusion. Chapter 4 is dedicated to diffusion in nanomaterials, while chapter 5 is devoted to the topic of diffusion along grain and interphase boundaries. This second topic is, of course, not new: it has been discussed for many years, but new themes have evolved in recent times in connection with segregation and stress effects upon grain-boundary diffusion. Both effects become more and more inf

Abstract

The continued development of advanced materials and processes requires an intimate understanding of diffusion mechanisms, and having the ability to model the diffusion-controlled phenomena which occur within materials during processing. This special volume focuses on the identification and modeling of various diffusion mechanisms and phenomena occurring in the advanced materials used in structural, electronic and other applications, as well as those taking place during processes such as deposition, solidification and heat-treatment. The fundamental aspects discussed include: diffusion in nanom

Abstract

Covering both basic and advanced thermodynamic and phase  principles,  as well as providing stability diagrams relevant for diffusion studies, Thermodynamics, Diffusion and the Kirkendall Effect in Solids maximizes reader insights into Fick’s laws of diffusion, atomic mechanisms, interdiffusion, intrinsic diffusion, tracer diffusion and the Kirkendall effect. Recent advances in the area of interdiffusion will be introduced, while the many practical examples and large number of illustrations given will serve to aid researches working in this area in learning the practical evaluation of various diffusion parameters from experimental results. With a unique approach to the two main focal points in solid state transformations, energetics (thermodynamics) and kinetics (interdiffusion) are extensively studied and their combined use in practise is discussed. Recent developments in the area of Kirkendall effect, grain boundary diffusion and multicomponent diffusion are also covered extensively. This book will appeal to students, academicians, engineers and researchers in academic institutions, industry research and development laboratories.

Abstract

Diffusion is a vital topic in solid-state physics and chemistry, physical metallurgy and materials science. Diffusion processes are ubiquitous in solids at elevated temperatures. A thorough understanding of diffusion in materials is crucial for materials development and engineering. This book first gives an account of the central aspects of diffusion in solids, for which the necessary background is a course in solid state physics. It then provides easy access to important information about diffuson in metals, alloys, semiconductors, ion-conducting materials, glasses and nanomaterials. Several diffusion-controlled phenomena, including ionic conduction, grain-boundary and dislocation pipe diffusion, are considered as well. Graduate students in solid-state physics, physical metallurgy, materials science, physical and inorganic chemistry or geophysics will benefit from this book as will physicists, chemists, metallurgists, materials engineers in academic and industrial research laboratories.
