Abstract

This book focuses on the advanced control of reduced dc-link capacitance AC motor drives. Compared with the conventional AC motor drives, the reduced DC-link capacitance motor drives could reduce the cost, enhance the reliability and improve the power density. The control strategies proposed in this book are verified by experimental results, which include high power factor control, drive system stability control, beat phenomenon suppression, enhanced flux-weakening control, anti-overvoltage control, etc. The major features of this book are the systematic analysis, effective and optimized control of the practical issues in industry application, which could help readers to learn the reduced dc-link capacitance PMSM drives and promote the drive system application. This book could benefit researchers, engineers, and students in the field of AC motor drives.

Abstract

This book introduces the optimal online charging control of electric vehicles (EVs) and battery energy storage systems (BESSs) in smart grids. The ultimate goal is to minimize the total energy cost as well as reduce the fluctuation of the total power flow caused by the integration of the EVs and renewable energy generators. Using both theoretic analysis and data-driven numerical results, the authors reveal the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed control techniques. A major benefit of these control techniques is their practicality, since they do not rely on any non-causal knowledge of future information. Researchers, operators of power grids, and EV users will find this to be an exceptional resource. It is also suitable for advanced-level students of computer science interested in networks, electric vehicles, and energy systems.

Abstract

This book presents a new topology of the non-isolated online uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system consisting of 3 components: bridgeless boost rectifier, battery charger/discharger, and an inverter. The online UPS system is considered to be the most preferable UPS due to its high level of power quality and proven reliability against all types of line disturbances and power outages. The new battery charger/discharger reduces the battery bank voltage, which improves performance and reliability, while a new control method for the inverter regulates the output voltage for both linear and nonlinear loads. The proposed USP system shows an efficiency of 94% during battery mode and 92% during the normal mode of operation.

Abstract

This book provides a comprehensive overview of protection schemes used for power transformers and describes the internal fault conditions and external abnormalities that may disrupt the operation of a power transformer. It also highlights the issues of current protective schemes, which pose several challenges in terms of the detection of internal faults and abnormalities, including computational burden, reduced accuracy, difficulty to implement, increased cost, computational complexity, impermeability to high resistance faults (HRF), and malfunction in conditions like cross-country fault. To address these problems, the book develops an effective novel transformer protection scheme that can eliminate all the said difficulties using an innovative algorithm. Given its scope, it is a useful resource for researchers and practitioners working in the field of power system protection, allowing them to design novel protection schemes, and providing insights into the hardware validation of developed technique.

Abstract

This book attempts to eliminate the existing “imbalance” between the theory of electric machines and the theory of electromagnetic fields. In order to develop viable methods for engineering calculations, the author applies field equations. The resulting, new methods consist of traditional calculation elements represented in a refined form (circuit-loops, parameters, equivalent circuits and voltage equations). These calculation methods should be effective both for researchers and engineering practitioners, especially, in relation to the modern electric machines, such as powerful turbine generators, large high-speed synchronous motors, etc. Provides conditions for the generalization of the field research results; Expands capabilities of engineering calculation methods; Improves upon the theory of engineering calculations, under the conditions of the Maxwell’s equations.

Abstract

This book brings together emerging objectives and paradigms in the control of both AC and DC microgrids; further, it facilitates the integration of renewable-energy and distribution systems through localization of generation, storage and consumption. The control objectives in a microgrid are addressed through the hierarchical control structure. After providing a comprehensive survey on the state of the art in microgrid control, the book goes on to address the most recent control schemes for both AC and DC microgrids, which are based on the distributed cooperative control of multi-agent systems. The cooperative control structure discussed distributes the co-ordination and optimization tasks across all distributed generators. This does away with the need for a central controller, and the control system will not collapse in response to the outage of a single unit. This avoids adverse effects on system flexibility and configurability, as well as the reliability concerns in connection with single points of failure that arise in traditional, centralized microgrid control schemes. Rigorous proofs develop each control methodology covered in the book, and simulation examples are provided to justify all of the proposed algorithms. Given its extensive yet self-contained content, the book offers a comprehensive source of information for graduate students, academic researchers, and practicing engineers working in the field of microgrid control and optimization. Advances in Industrial Control aims to report and encourage the transfer of technology in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of new work in all aspects of industrial control.

Abstract

This book highlights the electrical engineering aspects of a typical physics laboratory. To perform a sound experiment in a physics laboratory, it is paramount that readers understand the equipment and methods used to collect the data. This includes sensors (e.g., thermocouples and vacuum gauges), amplifiers (e.g., instrumentation amplifiers and lock-in amplifiers), oscilloscopes and probes (active probes and current probes), transmission cables (50-ohm termination) and noise shielding (grounding), spectrum analyzers (FFT and heterodyne technique), ADCs and digital signal processing, convolution and correlation, data analysis such as curve fitting, and uncertainty calculations (uncertainty ‘budgets’). The readers need to know about electromagnetic crosstalk, time-to-digital converters, student-t distributions, PID controllers, spectral leakage, and windows. This book helps readers understand all of that.
