This volume, which takes the form of an essay, attempts to structure a forward- looking approach to the evolving role of marketing in today’s economy. Many organisations today recognize the need to become more market responsive in view of the growing complexity of the global and interconnected market in which they operate. Internet technology is resulting in an increasingly globalised market, with easier access to information, new market players and new forms of partnerships. It is also changing consumer behaviour and reinforcing the power of the market over business. It is creating virtual markets where consumers can find customized solutions to their problems which cut across traditional market boundaries. In this new environment, traditional market participants have changing roles, new market actors are emerging and competition is intensifying. To be successful, being customer-oriented is not enough. Business leaders have to review their strategic options and stengthen the market orientation of their enterprises to cope effectively with today’s highly competitive, multi-stakeholder market. The objective of this book is to revisit the concept of traditional marketing management and to analyse changing market relationships among market players and their impact on the key decisions of strategic and operational marketing.

Markets emerge in recent historical research as important spheres of economic interaction in ancient societies. In the case of ancient Egypt, traditional models imagined an all-encompassing centralized, bureaucratic economy that left practically no place for market transactions, as many surviving documents only described the activities of the royal palace and of huge institutions mainly temples. Yet scattered references in the sources reveal that markets and traders were crucial actors in the economic life of ancient Egypt.0In this perspective, this volume aims to discuss the role of markets, traders and economic interaction (not necessarily organized through markets) and the use of "money" (metals, valuable commodities) in pre-modern societies, based on archaeological, anthropological and historical evidence. Furthermore, it intends to integrate different perspectives about the social organization of transactions and exchanges and the different forms taken by markets, from meeting places where exchanges operated under ritualized procedures and conventions, to markets in which profit-seeking activities were marginal in respect with other practices that stressed, on the contrary, community collaboration. The book also deals with social forms of pre-modern exchanges in which trust and ethnic solidarity guaranteed the validity of commercial operations in the absence of formal codes of laws or accepted authorities over long distances (trade diasporas, guilds, etc.). Finally, the volume analyzes a critical aspect of small-scale trade and markets, such as the commercialization of agricultural household production and its impact on the peasant economic strategies [4e de couv.]

Marx and Whitehead boldly asks us to reconsider capitalism, not merely as an "economic system" but as a fundamentally self-destructive mode that, by its very nature and operation, undermines the cohesive fabric of human existence. Author Anne Fairchild Pomeroy asserts that it is impossible to appreciate fully the impact of Marx's critique of capitalism without understanding the philosophical system that underlies it. Alfred North Whitehead's work is used to forge a systematic link between process philosophy and dialectical materialism via the category of production. Whitehead's process thought brings Marx's philosophical vision into sharper focus. This union provides the grounds for Pomeroy's claim that the heart of Marx's critique of capitalism is fundamentally ontological, and that therefore the necessary condition for genuine human flourishing lies in overcoming the capitalist form of social relations.
