This on-line handbook provides a comprehensive collection of statistical data relevant to the analysis of international trade, investment and development, for individual countries and for economic and trade groupings. It presents reference statistics considered of particular importance for describing, in the context of globalization, how developing countries have evolved in recent decades. The time series cover periods that are as long as figures obtainable permit (going back to 1950 when data are available). Within a consistent framework, the figures are structured into eight following chapters: international merchandise trade, trade and commodity price indices, structure of international trade by region, structure of international trade by product, international trade in services, international finance, indicators of development, and special studies (tentative terms of trade estimates for developing economies, concentration and diversification indices of exports and imports by country and country grouping, concentration indices of exports and imports and indices of structural change in trade, by product, average applied import tariff rates on non-agricultural and non-fuel products, instability indices and trends in free-market prices for selected primary commodities, world merchant fleet by flag of registration and by type of ship, network of exports by region and commodity group) (historical series).

The 2012 International Trade Statistics Yearbook, Volume I provides an overview of the international trade merchandise trade in 2012 and detailed information on the trade performance for numerous countries up to 2012. Overall, data for a total of 175 countries (or areas) are shown with the 2012 data on imports and exports by commodity and trading partner provided for approximately 90 countries (or areas), representing more than 70% of world trade of 2012. The goal is to provide a more analytical and condensed view of trade by using graphs, overview tables and descriptive text. For more detailed data, users are requested to go directly to UN Comtrade (http://comtrade.un.org/) which is the source of the information presented in the yearbook and which is continuously updated.

The 2012 International Trade Statistics Yearbook, Volume 2 - Trade by Commodity contains detailed tables showing international trade for 258 individual commodities (3-digit SITC groups) and eleven world trade tables covering trade values and indices up to the year 2012. The information contained is based on data provided by approximately 140 countries (areas), representing more than 90% of world trade of 2012. Volume 2 has been compiled approximately six months after the submission of Volume 1 as the preparation of these tables requires and benefits from the additional country data which normally become available later in the year. Volume 1 - Trade by Country (ISBN 9789211615739) has been compiled and made available earlier to allow for an advanced release of an overview of international merchandise trade in 2012 and for a much earlier publication of the available 2012 country (area) data.
