The conflicts that permeated the history of the medieval Near East, from the Crusades to the Mongol invasions, necessitated the presence of warriors at the heart of power. The Mamluks, military slaves, freed to access the title of emir, ruled Egypt and Syria, from 1250, with the title of sultan, and were among those who defended the Muslim world against the perils of time. The uniqueness of Mamluk society lies not only in the fact that former slaves, captured as children in the plains of Central Asia and in the Caucasus, became political leaders, but also that the society concerned was made up of two elite groups. complementary: on the one hand, the Mameluks, Turkish-speaking Arabic, converted to Islam, holding political power and constituting the armed forces; on the other hand, the ulemas, Arabic speakers, Muslims by birth, literati holding religious functions, those of the judiciary and the transmission of knowledge. In this lies the difficult challenge of this work: to grasp, as finely as possible, beyond the distinction and relations of domination, the modalities of this long coexistence, and to study, understand and restore the complexity of the interactions and relations that Mamluks and civil and religious elites have been able to forge among themselves. To do this, this study focuses on the reign of the Turkish sultans (1250-1382), the Dawlat al-Atrāk. Through an analysis of personal links, their formation and their plural nature, she intends not only to place the individual and his practices at the heart of research, but also to reconstruct the networks of relationships of this period and show their importance in the field of research. exercise of power and the development of the social contract.

Colonial Spanish bureaucracy produced masses of “autobiographical” texts ('relaciones de méritos and servicios') which forced/invited individuals to present themselves as perfect subjects of the King in order to be rewarded. Bureaucracy produced the officials of the colonial regime, and, at the same time, it provided individuals with the possibility of exploring the literary potential of writing one’s curriculum vitae. This book helps contextualize a body of often-used yet understudied historic sources; it indicates that the fabric of early modern society was held together by a pervasive economy of 'mercedes' (rewards); and it shows that the tension between state-induced production of autobiographical documents and the individual’s endeavor to outsmart this system is at the origin of modern forms of literature.

This book brings together up-to-date research from prominent international scholars in a collaborative exploration of the Japan’s efforts to shape Asia’s rapidly shifting regional order. Pulled between an increasingly inward-looking America whose security support remains critical and a rising and more militarily assertive China with whom Japan retains deep economic interdependence, Japanese leaders are consistently maneuvering to ensure the country’s regional interests. Nuclear and missile threats from North Korea and historically problematic relations with South Korea further complicate Japanese endeavors. So too do the shifting winds of Japanese domestic politics, economics and identity. The authors weave these complex threads together to offer a nuanced portrait of both Japan and the region. Scholars, observers of politics, and policymakers will find this a timely and useful collection. T. J. Pempel, with a Ph.D. from Columbia University, is Jack M. Forcey Professor of Political Science in U.C. Berkeley's Department of Political Science which he joined in July 2001. He served as director of the Institute of East Asian Studies from 2002 until 2006. Yul Sohn, with a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in Political Science, is Professor of International Studies in Yonsei University's Graduate School of International Studies. "In professional and academic contexts nothing is more important than helping people to understand and engage with democratic society. Sant has written an excellent book which helps greatly towards that end. She has developed incisive new arguments about the nature of contemporary politics and education. Using the most recent as well as classic literature, she explores key ideas and issues. Through wide ranging discussions and by referring to her own valuable empirical work she characterizes and creates thoughtful insights and innovative pedagogical approaches. This book achieves the very difficult task of illuminating complex ideas at the same time as helping to determine practical ways to achieve social justice through education. Political education has been neglected for too long. This book is a bold new step in its achievement."--Ian Davies, Emeritus Professor, University of York, UK.

"This book looks at the evolution of the European Parliament from a wide number of angles and in depth. It well illuminates how this fascinating and unique institution - the worlds first experiment in trans-national democracy - continues to innovate, to surprise and to have a significant impact in ways (both positive and negative) that were not always predicted." —Richard Corbett, MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber, UK Labour Party leader in the European Parliament “Does the European Parliament effectively represent Europe’s citizens in the legislative process? Is the EP a check on the governments, big member states, or big business? If the EP has become so powerful, why hasn’t the EU’s democratic deficit been solved? This book answers these and many other questions, extensively reviewing existing findings and setting agendas for future research. This is essential reading for scholars of European politics” —Simon Hix, Harold Laski Professor of Political Science, London School of Economics, UK This book assesses the changes that have occurred within the European Parliament and its external relations since the Lisbon treaty (2009) and the last European elections (2014). It is undoubtedly the institution that has evolved the most since the 1950s. Despite the crises experienced by European integration in the last years, the Parliament is still undergoing important changes in its formal competences, its influence on policy-making, its relations with other EU institutions, its internal organisation and its internal political dynamics. Every contribution analyses the most recent aspects of these evolutions and addresses overlooked topics, providing an overview of the current state of play which challenges the mainstream intergovernmental approach of the EU. This project results from research conducted at the Department of European Political and Governance Studies of the College of Europe. Individual research of several policy analysts of the European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS) has contributed to this endeavour. Olivier Costa is Research Professor at the CNRS, Bordeaux, France and Director of European Political and Governance Studies at the College of Europe, Bruges, Belgium. He is co-director of the European Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence of Aquitaine.
