Le phénomène commémoratif occupe une place de plus en plus importante dans l’espace politique, médiatique et intellectuel. Cette inflation, sinon cette omniprésence, entraînent-elle une perte de sens ? En d’autres termes, trop de commémoration tue-t-il la commémoration ? La commémoration n’est pas l’histoire. La mise en scène de la mémoire entraîne une part d’inclusion et d’exclusion, donc d’oubli. La commémoration sert la « vérité » officielle ou à l’inverse des causes dissidentes, minoritaires, et contestataires. La commémoration a occupé une place stratégique dans la construction des États-nations, à la suite de l’implosion de la chrétienté médiévale. On constate depuis quelque temps une fragmentation : les dimensions communautaire, voire communautariste, d’une part, et supranationale, d’autre part, vont-elles l’emporter au détriment de la dimension nationale traditionnelle ? Cet ouvrage, associant spécialistes des langues et cultures étrangères, historiens, politologues et littéraires, a pour ambition de croiser les regards et de créer des échos. Du bicentenaire de 1789 à Hiroshima, de Québec à Austerlitz, et de Luther à l’indépendance américaine, les auteurs s’interrogent sur l’évolution du phénomène, depuis l’Âge des Réformes jusqu’à nos jours.

The period between 1917 and 1957, starting with the birth of the USSR and the American intervention in the First World War and ending with the Treaty of Rome, is of the utmost importance for contextualizing and understanding the intellectual origins of the European Community. During this time of crisis, many contemporaries, especially intellectuals, felt they faced a momentous decision which could bring about a radically different future. The understanding of what Europe was and what it should be was questioned in a profound way, forcing Europeans to react.

Making the Englishmen: Debates on National Identity 1550-1650 asks how Englishmen defined themselves at a time of profound change and uncertainty. It will seek to contextualise the ways in which Englishness came to be construed as free, plain and unCatholic, and situate this construction as part of a larger attempt to create a narrative which would distinguish them from the rest of Europe. But all such attempts were fraught with anxiety and contestation. The normative ideals of Englishness were constantly being undermined, affronted and ignored. In the disarray characteristic of the post-Reformation era, there were constant fears that the Englishman was becoming both slavish and treacherous in political, cultural and religious ways. Englishness was under threat.

Comment concilier l'unité de la Nation et sa diversité ? L'exaltation de la Patrie commune entreprise par la Troisième République se fonde précisément sur la célébration des beautés variées de la France. Au travers des manuels départementaux rédigés par les autorités pédagogiques se dessine la représentation de la France des « petites patries ». Inventaires émerveillés des sites pittoresques, hagiographies des grands hommes locaux, hymnes aux vins du cru et descriptions enthousiastes des traditions s'inscrivent dans un même projet : développer chez les futurs citoyens l'amour du sol natal pour les conduire à l'amour de la Patrie. La construction des identités locales mise en œuvre vise à montrer que chaque partie de la France, par-delà ses spécificités, est quintessence de la Nation. Les publications pédagogiques effectuent la synthèse des divers discours républicains sur la France régionale et mettent en relief les lieux communs qui en organisent aujourd'hui encore la perception.
