Dans une société en proie à de profondes mutations, le rapport au travail des cadres évolue. Chez eux, des comportements nouveaux se font jour qui, hier encore, paraissaient improbables. Quelque chose semble s'être fissuré, le vernis d'une condition salariale spécifique tendrait à se craqueler et l'investissement des cadres à se transformer. Ancienne figure de proue d'un certain « esprit du capitalisme », les cadres auraient-ils perdu leur raison d'être ? On aborde ici le rapport au travail des cadres à l'intersection des histoires individuelles, catégorielles et sociétales. Les unes se mêlent aux autres dans d'inextricables relations qui fournissent aux individus les moyens de faire face au quotidien du travail. Tous ne partent donc pas dotés de dispositions semblables. Le suivi de leurs expériences dans la durée permet de montrer que les difficultés qu'ils doivent affronter génèrent en eux des tensions. On voit alors qu'un lourd investissement de soi reste envisageable tant que les espoirs renfermés dans le sens de leur trajectoire professionnelle parviennent - encore - à contenir ces tensions. Mais quelles conditions sociétales doivent donc être réunies pour faciliter, au moindre coût, l'adaptation des cadres au monde du travail ?

La montée en puissance de la logique gestionnaire dans les administrations publiques confronte les professionnels à la multiplication des procédures d'évaluation et au renforcement de la codification des écrits liés à l'exercice quotidien de leur travail. Militaires, policiers, magistrats, greffières, surveillants pénitentiaires, observateurs européens des lieux d'enfermement, travailleurs sociaux et médecins étudiés ici, tous déplorent cet accroissement des écrits standardisés qui réduit considérablement le temps consacré aux fonctions « nobles » du métier. La multiplication des procédures d'écriture, passage obligé de la reddition de compte, est d'autant plus condamnée qu'elle touche des professions qui ont un rapport paradoxal à l'écrit. La figure du terne bureaucrate plane comme un stigmate à tenir à distance. Paradoxe en effet puisque ce commis aux écritures tant moqué maîtrise un capital nécessaire non seulement à la réalisation du travail lui-même et à son contrôle, mais aussi à la mobilité des trajectoires professionnelles. L'écriture est de fait centrale dans les carrières. Celui qui n'y a pas accès reste un simple exécutant, alors que celui qui la mobilise conformément aux normes de sa profession possède un atout essentiel dans les luttes de placement. Grâce à la diversité des terrains mobilisés, les auteurs réunis dans cet ouvrage dévoilent les paradoxes de l'écriture professionnelle. Outil privilégié du new public management, elle reste une ressource essentielle dans la division du travail et dans les stratégies de mobilité et de distinction des professionnels.

To chart the inspiring journey of Pierre Jeanniot is to trace the remarkable development of the air transport industry. In his youth, Jeanniot survived the bombing of Rome, the occupation of France, and was a witness to the Resistance in the Jura Mountains. In 1963, after the Sainte-The?re?se air tragedy and the threat of finding himself jobless, Jeanniot was inspired to create the famous Black Box, which has since become a pillar of aviation security. Under his direction, Air Canada chose the Airbus rather than the Boeing to renew its fleet, in the midst of a highly visible political crisis. Against all odds, Jeanniot also orchestrated the successful privatization of the airline. His visionary speech at Amman, delivered when he was at the helm of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), laid out modern aviation's most urgent priorities regarding accident prevention, protection of the environment, and technological progress. A master of logistics, he successfully negotiated the impasse in the skies following the September 11 terrorist attacks and handled the many complications that came in their wake. Pierre Jeanniot's influence has been felt far beyond the aviation world. His longstanding desire to facilitate access to higher learning led him to participate actively in the founding of the Université du Québec. A skilled diplomat, he also helped to resolve political problems in Iran, Libya, North Korea, and the Middle East. Taking Aviation to New Heightsis the story of a great leader who has left an indelible mark on his milieu. He has truly piloted aviation to new heights.
