Abstract

Although consumption of spirits on a global scale is vast, the spirits industry derives its profits from a relatively small number of countries and product lines. This valuable book provides an overview of all aspects of the industry, covering all major categories of spirits, and contains a wealth of information on trading statistics, regulations and consumption patterns. It discusses the challenges facing the giant companies, profiling the leading companies in detail, and assesses whether their structure is appropriate to long-term success in the industry. The international spirits ind

Abstract

India’s rice and wheat crops are in crisis – a dangerous situation for a nation where 75 per cent of the population depends on agriculture for a living. Today’s falling or static yields in these two key crops have been the result of the intensification of agriculture from the 1960s on. That so-called ‘Green Revolution’, which depended heavily on chemical fertilizers and pesticides, saw crop production keep pace with population growth until the end of the last millennium. Today, however, the sector is suffering from depleted soils and reduced ground water levels. Past excesses have even left the current generation of farmers with health hazards. The authors of this volume, experts in agriculture and agronomy in the subcontinent, say a new approach is needed. India’s population will rise from today’s 1.18 billion people to as many as 1.5 billion by 2020, with 25 per cent more mouths to feed. Not only that, but agriculture’s pre-eminent place in the country’s economy, where it is 18 per cent of total GDP and the biggest single export sector, make any problem in the industry one of national importance. Other nations in Asia, including Pakistan, Nepal, China and Bangladesh, have already recognized the problem of static yields and have developed the concept of the ‘Integrated Nutrient Management’ (INM) system. Its aim is to make agricultural cropping sustainable by maintaining or enhancing the soil quality while leaving room for increases in yields, and it advocates the balanced use of both organic and inorganic methodologies. Mahajan and Gupta, both highly experienced experts in the science of agriculture, and in Gupta’s case a leading environmentalist, examine in detail India’s cropping crisis as well as the possible remedies. They conclude that the INM System is an essential component of any solution. The book also delineates potential sources of organic plant nutrients and bio-fertilizers in India, and analyzes the rice-wheat cropping system and the role INM could play in sustaining crop productivity. The authors also provide insight into the balanced use of plant nutrients in increasing rice and wheat productivity and about the effective use of fertilizers and water management practices for rice and wheat crops. Constraints in the adoption of INM system and future research strategies are the other crucial topics which are covered in this comprehensive text.

Abstract

Due to their buffer capacity, soils and ecological systems usually react gradually to different land use or climatic changes. Hence, effects are often quantifiable only after many decades. Long-term field experiments make it possible to recognize such long-term effects, which are caused e.g. by different fertilization treatments, for the respective location. This knowledge is essential for developing sustainable and ecologically desirable management concepts. With the “eternal rye” experiment, laid out by Julius Kühn in 1878, the Institute of Agricultural and Nutritional Sciences of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg has the second oldest long-term fertilization trial of the world after Rothamstedt (UK). In addition, four more long-term fertilization experiments as well as one soil development trial exist in Halle, all founded by Karl Schmalfuß in 1948/49. Wolfgang Merbach and Annette Deubel summarize the most important results and draw conclusions for the continuation of these internationally important experiments.

Abstract

Improving fertilizer recommendations for increased return from fertilizer investments and optimized crop response to fertilizer has been a major area of investigation of IFDC. Since 2008, IFDC through its Natural Resource Management (NRM) Program has partnered with national agricultural research services to undertake research, development and extensive on-farm trials in various agroecosystems in West Africa to develop site specific fertilizer recommendations for crops. Validation trials have been conducted in many countries (Benin (maize, cassava), Burkina (rice, maize and sorghum) Ghana (maize, cocoa and cassava) and Togo (maize and cassava). However, these fertilizer recommendation data remain scattered and most of them need final statistical analysis before they can be fully utilized and/or scaled out. As part of its efforts to improve fertilizer use and efficiency in West Africa, and following the recent adoption of the West African fertilizer recommendation action plan (RAP) by ECOWAS, IFDC has taken technical lead with key partner institutions and experts to build on previous and current fertilizer recommendations for various crops and countries in West Africa for wider uptake by public policy makers and fertilizer industry actors.

Abstract

This book contains 17 chapters providing details on decision tools that use linear programming to determine recommendations specific to a farmer's context intended to maximize profit from fertilizer use in sub-Saharan Africa. Chapter 1 and 2 discusses the principles and approach, and spatial analysis of fertilizer use optimization, respectively. Chapter 3 covers integrated soil fertility management in sub-Saharan Africa. Further, Chapters 4 to 16 explore optimizing fertilizer use within an integrated soil fertility management framework in countries in sub-Saharan Africa, including: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Malawi, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. Finally, Chapter 17 describes the process of enabling fertilizer use optimization in sub-Saharan Africa.
