Pets, companion animals of the people, are usually small, humorous and charming. We find what we could call pet architecture, architecture having pet like characteristics, existing in the most unexpected places within the Tokyo city limits. They are areas such as a 1-meter width space among many closely placed buildings, a small and subdivided piece of land, or a long and slender city block sandwiched between the road and the railroad. These unusual places are the byproducts of urban development and have been produced abundantly in Tokyo. This undefined space has come into existence in the marginal realm between the different city systems, or it is immanent in the city system itself! They are small and though they appear, at first glance, to be somewhat cold and distant to the surrounding environment we can say that this type of architecture adopts the attributes of pet culture and have become pets of the city environment. They too are small, humorous and charming in their own way!

Even though Vitruvius includes mobile war machines, clocks, waterworks and other moving constructions in his treatises as well as buildings, architecture has traditionally been understood as an art of space, not of time, and indeed as the very image of stability. Yet the possibility of incorporating change and motion in architecture has fascinated architects since the beginning of the modern movement, if not earlier, and reflects and age-old longing to find an architectural expression in step with the most advanced developments of the times. This book analyses the ways that contemporary Dutch architects have thematized the issue of movement in their buildings and projects. The examples, drawn from the work of OMA / Rem Koolhaas, NOX Architects, Kas Oosterhuis, UN Studio, NL Architects, Bentham Crouwel, Meyer & Van Schooten, Herman Hertzberger and others, illustrate a range of approaches from metaphorical translations of motion into aerodynamic forms to the dynamization of both the design process and its results through time-based CAAD techniques and new geometries. With a theoretical framework defined by the writings of Bergson, Merleau-Ponty and Deleuze and orignal observations, Kari Jormakka charts the couse for a general theory of motion in architecture and sheds important light on the current state and future prospects of architectural design.

This text provides a definition and examination of the so-called contemporary style that dominated architecture and design from the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s. In those years of increasing promise and prosperity, a fresh and liberating style was hallmarked by open-plan interiors and vibrant fabric design, manifesting itself in the picture window and the open plan; in vibrant fabric design and printed wall coverings; in new forms of furniture from Scandinavia and stylish light fittings from Italy; and most tellingly in the Contemporary kitchen with its fitted units and mod con appliances. Included is work by Charles Eames, Pierre Koenig, Arne Jacobsen and Lucienne Day.
