Abstract

"Education has never been non-partisan. Buffeted by economic, political, and social influences, education, educators, and various stakeholders have taken sides to provide institutionalized instruction to child and adult learners. Instruction that is right or wrong, ethical or unethical, just or unjust, can be just that, depending on where one's education and schooling takes place in the world. Education alone can be construed as a first step towards indoctrination into a community and nation's way of life. Despite divergent views, the ultimate goal of serving students has remained paramount. At the same time, the work of educators has placed them at the forefront of numerous debates and controversies that have beset the profession. The process of informing oneself professionally and personally in the midst of such educational deliberations may not be an easy task, but may be a necessary one given the impact of one's decisions and stances on learners. This book focuses on contemporary and critical topics of debate that educators face in American educational settings. The book's distinctiveness rests on its Socratic approach to the content. Each chapter begins with the examination of an issue of interest and concludes with a series of related questions. Readers are asked to ponder the materials individually and with others to enable all to draw their own conclusions. This book will interest and benefit educational professionals along all points in their professional careers from new professionals and students-in-training to those with extensive experiences across educational disciplines"--

Abstract

Today's educators stand at the crossroads of globalization and technology. The world is rapidly shrinking. The workplace is being transformed before our very eyes. Technology is forever changing the way we perceive reality and the way we do business. Educators are required to equip students for a workplace that has yet to emerge. The skill sets of today's job market are often obsolete before students can enter the workplace. Now is the time for educators to rise to the challenges of our modern world. By embracing the vision of yesterday's practitioners and joining hands with tomorrow's practitioners, educators can transform our world and equip their students for the upward mobility and career flexibility required in tomorrow's workplace.

Abstract

While Finland and Singapore both enjoy the global educational limelight due to their successful school systems, they differ considerably in their approaches to teacher accountability. Finland's light-touch teacher accountability system focuses on setting standards at the point of entry to the teaching profession, whereas Singapore uses a comprehensive, tiered, and competitive performance management system that deploys promotions and performance bonuses to manage the processes and outputs of teacher practice in schools. In this chapter, I use interviews with 24 Finnish and Singaporean teachers to explore the differences between these distinct approaches to teacher accountability-and to account for their disparate but apparently successful pathways. I argue that these disparate approaches share an underlying principle: each model of teacher accountability is compatible with the macrosystem in which it is embedded. Thus, teachers regard the accountability instruments as legitimate, enabling the instruments to favourably influence teacher motivation and practice. Specifically, public trust in Finland's education system is distributed throughout each level of the system, with teachers enjoying high generalised trust. This is compatible with an accountability approach that gives teachers considerable autonomy over their daily work. In contrast, public trust in Singapore's education system is concentrated on the Ministry of Education. This institutionally focused trust supports-and is supported by-a teacher accountability system that gives the managers considerable influence over teacher practice.

Abstract

The essay shows the historical and theoretical connections between adult education and distance learning, showing how the latter has made use of the many theories developed since the Andragogic challenge and how it has been able to offer itself as a catalyst for the former. Especially starting from MOOCs, this dual nature of distance learning - that of concretizer and that of reflective catalyst of adult education - are transformed into a research that touches pedagogical aspects (related to continuing education and its strategic role), teaching aspects (related to the methods of structuring training actions), but also and above all ethical-political apects, related to the democratization of Higher Education.

Abstract

The contribution reconstructs the work of innovation carried out by Cosimo Ridolfi in the Agricultural Institute of Meleto in Val d'Elsa, as a paradigmatic example of the relationship between theory and practice and a model example of school-work alternation. Through a historical perspective, we want to highlight the educational aspects of practical and conceptual activity in practical and operational contexts, especially in agriculture, a tradition inaugurated by Ridolfi and continued by Lambruschini, which initiated a true Tuscan school of innovation in the formal learning setting of education and training that has become a European model.

Abstract

The separative logic is not educational. The essay reviews the historical events that have generated an undervaluation of vocational training pathways compared to education pathways. This "minority" of perception and legislation stems from a logic of separation with many faces which, taken all together, with etiological spirit and historical-ordinamental contextualization, explain the "untenable" inferiority of vocational education: people (the 'inferiors') and political-bureaucratic elite (the 'superiors'), nature and culture, man and citizen, etc. These separations concerned the idea of labor (one among them, the opposition between 'manual labor' and 'intellectual labor') and did not allow for increasing the educational power of it. Only a logic of integration (embedded and embodied) can defuse the ideas of separation and provide an organic and holistic image of education.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic is still impacting education and training systems. Under extremely challenging circumstances, it accelerated digital transformation and triggered rapid, large-scale change. Developments that would otherwise have taken years, were possible in only a few weeks. Today we are facing both challenges and opportunities. This means that we need to help teaching, step up our efforts and gradually move from temporary, emergency-focused distance education to more effective, sustainable and equitable digital education, within the framework of creative, flexible, modern and inclusive education and training. The education and training system is increasingly part of the digital transformation and it can take advantage of the benefits and opportunities of this ongoing change.
