'Ik, wij, zij' is een verrijkend boek voor iedereen die het doen en laten van de hedendaagse mens wil vatten. De drie persoonlijke voornaamwoorden vormen het uitgangspunt voor een reeks sociologische beschouwingen over onze tijd. Ik. We leven in een geïndividualiseerd tijdperk. Mensen kunnen hun leven beter vormgeven dan tijdens pakweg de jaren vijftig, maar die toegenomen vrijheid gaat samen met onvrijheid, met een arbeidend zichzelf-zijn en een gemoedsstemming die pendelt tussen manie en depressie. Wij. Het populisme van 'wij' tegen 'zij' is doortastend. Een als homogeen voorgestelde volkswil zet de democratie onder druk. Tegelijk ontluikt in de creatieve economie, het onderwijs of de kunstensector een heel ander 'wij' dat inzet op samenwerking. Zijn die twee voorstellingen verzoenbaar? Zij. Geen samenleving zonder communicatie. Oude en nieuwe media bieden communicatieve soevereiniteit: tv of smartphone zet je naar believen aan of uit. De media functioneren echter ook als een polariserend 'zij' dat ons voortdurend opjut om te spreken en te moraliseren. Met essayistische flair neemt auteur Rudi Laermans onze maatschappij onder de loep, op een afwisselend speelse en stellige manier. Identifying scientism as religion’s secular counterpart, this collection studies contemporary contestations of the authority of science. These controversies suggest that what we are witnessing today is not an increase in the authority of science at the cost of religion, but a dual decline in the authorities of religion and science alike. This entails an erosion of the legitimacy of universally binding truth claims, be they religiously or scientifically informed. Approaching the issue from a cultural-sociological perspective and building on theories from the sociology of religion, the volume unearths the cultural mechanisms that account for the headwind faced by contemporary science. The empirical contributions highlight how the field of academic science has lost much of its former authority vis-à-vis competing social realms; how political and religious worldviews define particular research findings as favorites while dismissing others; and how much of today’s distrust of science is directed against scientific institutions and academic scientists rather than against science per se. Dick Houtman is Senior Professor of Sociology of Culture and Religion at the Center for Sociological Research at the University of Leuven, Belgium, and Faculty Fellow at the Center for Cultural Sociology, Yale University, USA. Stef Aupers is Senior Professor of Media Culture at the Institute for Media Studies at the University of Leuven, Belgium. Rudi Laermans is Senior Professor of Social Theory at the Center for Sociological Research at the University of Leuven, Belgium.

In 1969 maakte Dan Van Severen zijn laatste schilderij in olieverf. Als een negentiende-eeuwse romanticus was hij op zoek naar de ultieme werkelijkheid, maar het burgerlijk-materiële aspect van verf en kwast stond hem daarbij in de weg. Een afgewogen zuiveringsproces bracht hem tot een synthetiserende visie op de wereld : kleur en inhoud moesten wijken voor een cerebrale activiteit, die uitmondde in een eigen vocabularium - een ascetisch, contemplatief en transcendentaal lijnenspel. In het inleidende essay gaat de auteur dieper in op het iconoclastische aspect van Van Severens oeuvre. Behalve een uitvoerige biografische schets zijn ook eerder gepubliceerde teksten van Michel Seuphor, Yves Gevaert en Leo Van Damme opgenomen.
