Zuinig brandstofverbruik, lage emissies en veel rijplezier, dat zijn de eisen waaraan moderne voertuigen moeten voldoen. Tot nog toe werd dit vooral bereikt door optimalisering van conventionele aandrijfconcepten. Momenteel worden er, mede ingegeven door de wereldwijde crisis en politieke ambities, in hoog tempo alternatieve aandrijfconcepten ontwikkeld om ook in de toekomst de mobiliteit te kunnen garanderen. Daarbij wordt een belangrijke plaats ingenomen door de hybride en elektrische voertuigaandrijvingen. Bij hybride voertuigen wordt voor de aandrijving gebruik gemaakt van een combinatie van een verbrandings- en elektromotor, wat mogelijkheden biedt voor het toevoegen van extra functies zoals: start/stop functie, optimalisatie van het bedrijfspunt van de verbrandingsmotor en extra koppel en terugwinning van remenergie. In de verdere toekomst zullen voertuigen volledig elektrisch worden aangedreven en uitgerust met brandstofcellen. Daarbij is geen verbrandingsmotor meer nodig en dus ook geen benzine en dieselbrandstof. In deze eerste speciale editie uit de reeks Technische Leergangen wordt onder meer toegelicht hoe bij toepassing van het hybride concept een toename van het aandrijfvermogen bij een gelijktijdige afname van het brandstofverbruik mogelijk is.
