This work examines how and under what circumstances past commemorations have occurred. In Germany these stretch back to the Reformationsjubiläum of 1617. Many other celebrations have followed, including those marking the anniversaries of Luther's birth (in 1483) and death (in 1546).

Moses ben Abraham Darʿī, born in Alexandria into a family of Moroccan Jewish immigrants, lived in Egypt in the middle of the twelfth century. Though he visited Damascus and Jerusalem, he spent most of his professional life as a physician and poet in the Karaite community of Fusṭāṭ-Cairo. This study offers an annotated edition of secular poems taken from the earliest manuscript, NLR Evr. I 802, dated to the fifteenth century. The Hebrew text and Judaeo-Arabic heading of each poem are provided in the original order attested in the manuscript. The introduction to this edition seeks to evaluate Darʿī’s poetry in the light of the Andalusian-Hebrew poetical tradition and within the context of Hebrew literary activity in the Muslim East. “This learned book displays sound, rigorous scholarship in the best tradition of the philological-historical method… It also provides solid ground for further work by scholars with different agendas, different scholarly interests and different methodologies in the study of medieval Hebrew poetry. On all accounts, it is a welcome and most valuable addition to the field.” Esperanza Alfonso, CCHS-CSIC 'Yeshaya's work is an excellent contribution to the study of both medieval Hebrew poetry and Karaitica, showing Darʿī to be a central representative of Hebrew poets writing in the Muslim East and, most importantly, a charming author, whose Karaiteness only adds to the attraction.' In Poetry and Memory in Karaite Prayer Joachim Yeshaya offers an edition of liturgical poems which the Karaite poet Moses Darʿī composed in twelfth-century Egypt as introductory poems for the Torah readings on each Sabbath. The Hebrew text and Judaeo-Arabic heading of each poem are provided in the original order attested in the manuscript NLR Evr. I 802, dated to the fifteenth century. Every poem comes with a commentary section consisting of English commentary essays and bilingual (Hebrew / English) line-by-line annotations. In the conclusion following this edition, Joachim Yeshaya demonstrates how Darʿī’s liturgical poems are among the earliest examples of the introduction of poetry, Andalusian Rabbanite poetical norms, and the “memory” of being exiled from Jerusalem into Karaite prayer.

Global developments have come to shape our lives, economically, culturally, and even religiously. Young people growing up in a global age have to be prepared for living in this age. Economic and technological demands are important, but there also is a need for personal and social orientations that go beyond them. This book provides both insights into the Protestant tradition in education as well as its meaning for the future of the church, for society and for individual persons. It follows an innovative approach by combining perspectives from three different contexts - Germany with its important Protestant starting points in the Reformation, the United States as a country which has been strongly influenced by Protestantism, and South Korea with its comparatively young Protestant tradition. The book is based on a combination of international points of view, on transnational cooperation, on comparative insights, and on making constant reference to a global horizon. Its presentations and ideas not only address globalization as a driving force behind many future developments, but also demonstrate an exercise of global educational thinking. [...] [T]he book is a thought-provoking contribution of three scholars from three different corners of the earth. Their reflections on the past, present and future of Protestant RE might be helpful to all those involved in this important task, no matter in what location and learning environment that might be. - Boris Paschke, in: International Journal of Christianity and Education 23 (3) (2019), S. 378. Jahrgang 2/2020, S. 45f. The strength of the book is that it is written by three experts of Christian education form their respective countries. Thus, the book itself is a brilliant example of transnational cooperation and knowledge transfer in religious education. - David Käebisch, in: British Journal of Religious Education, 42:3, 370-372.

This book suggests a new approach to the social history of Jewish religious movements in the Second Temple and early Rabbinic periods. It argues that most of these movements and their traditions emerged within the context of complex interaction between traditional families and disciple circles. The first part of the book examines the development of Jewish religious movements during the Second Temple period. It culminates with the discussion of the Dead Sea Sect, which is analyzed as the first unambiguous example of a movement shifting from a social structure based on families to a social structure based on disciple circles. The second part of the book discusses the history of pharisaic and early rabbinic movements from a similar perspective. Topics covered in the book will be of interest to scholars of Judaism and Early Christianity.

This volume consists of an edition, translated into English and with an extensive introduction, of the Arabic translation and commentary on the book of Esther by one of the preeminent litterateurs of the Karaite “Golden Age” (10th–11th centuries), Yefet ben ‘Eli ha-Levi. Yefet’s text represents the first completely extant, devoted commentary on Esther and, consequently, provides fascinating insight into the history and development of exegetical thought on this book, both among the Karaites as well as the Rabbanites. Various facets of Yefet’s exegesis which we explore in our introduction include his rationalistic method, compilatory tendency, relationship to the doctrines of the Islamic Mu‘tazila, and his influence both by and upon other Jewish exegetes (Karaite and Rabbanite). We also assess Yefet’s Arabic translation technique and include a survey of all extant Karaite commentaries on Esther, both in Arabic as well as Hebrew. "At first sight, the book stands out as a model of systematic organization and thoroughness in treatment of detail...Wechsler has given us a detailed survey of the place of Yefet in the history of Karaite exegesis and in the history of Karaite theoretical argument." - I.R.M. Bóid "Altogether, this book may be considered an important step forward in the availability of Yefet ben 'Eli's commentaries in critical editions and will serve as a standard for future publications of his vast exegetical oeuvre." - Ronny Vollandt, University of Cambridge
