Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

In this volume, gender is seen as a communicative achievement and as a social category interacting with other social parametres such as age, status, prestige, institutional and ethnic frameworks, cultural and situative contexts. The authors come from a variety of backgrounds such as sociology of communication, anthropological linguistics, sociolinguistics, social psychology, and text linguistics. Masculinity and femininity are conceived of as varying culturally, historically and contextually. All contributions discuss empirical research of communication and the question of whether (and how) gender is a salient variable in discourse. So, one aim of the book is to trace the varying relevance of gender in interaction. Emotion politics, ideology, body concepts, and speech styles are related to ethnographic description of the contexts within which communication takes place. These contexts range from private to public communication, and from mixed-sex to same-sex conversations framed by different cultural backgrounds (Australian, German, Georgian, Turkish, US-American).

Abstract

This book addresses current approaches to sequentiality in pragmatics and discourse analysis. It reflects the current moves in ethnomethodological conversation analysis and speech act theory to cross methodological borders to arrive at a conception of a sequence, which extends the local notion of sequentiality by integrating further constitutive components, such as cognition, intentionality, activity type, culture and genre. The individual contributions were presented at the 7th IPrA Conference held in Budapest in the year 2000. They range from critical analyses of speech act theory and cognitive pragmatics to detailed micro analyses of genre- and activity-specific constraints on the production and interpretation of meaning. The first part "sequences in theory and practice: minimal and unbounded" discusses the theoretical premises and exemplifies these by detailed data analyses. The second part "sequences in discourse: the micro-macro interface" examines genre-specific constraints on individual sequences and shows the benefits of supplementing the microanalytic concept of sequentiality with macroanalytic categories.

Abstract

First published in 2005, Economics and Social Interaction is a fresh attempt to overcome the traditional inability of economics to deal with interpersonal phenomena that occur within the sphere of markets and productive organizations. It makes use of traditional economic concepts for understanding interpersonal events, while venturing beyond those concepts to give a better account of personalised interactions. In contrast to other books, Economics and Social Interaction offers the reader a rigorous effort at extending economic analysis to a difficult field in a consistent manner, sensitive to insights from other behavioural and social sciences. This collection represents an important contribution to a growing research agenda in the social sciences.
