"Eusebius' ecclesiastical history, written in the early fourth century, continues to serve as our primary gateway to a crucial three hundred year period: the rise of early Christianity under the Roman Empire. In this volume, James Corke-Webster undertakes the first systematic study considering the History in the light of its fourth-century circumstances as well as its author's personal history, intellectual commitments, and literary abilities. He argues that the Ecclesiastical History is not simply an attempt to record the past history of Christianity, but a sophisticated mission statement that uses events and individuals from that past to mould a new vision of Christianity tailored to Eusebius' fourth-century context. Nachdem Bucer sich im Winter 1531/32 in Straßburg mit den dort zahlreich versammelten Dissenters auseinandergesetzt hat, rückt ab dem Frühjahr 1532 wieder die Reichspolitik ins Zentrum seiner Aufmerksamkeit, als in Schweinfurt in Bucers Gegenwart die Verhandlungen über einen befristeten Waffenstillstand zwischen Kaiser und Protestanten beginnen. Erst Bucers theologische Gutachten und Argumentationshilfen eröffnen den Oberdeutschen dort die Möglichkeit, die Lehrformulierungen der Confessio Augustana und ihrer Apologie mitzutragen und so gegen das Kalkül des Kaisers die politische Isolation zu vermeiden. Während die lutherische Seite dies als Wechsel auf ihre Seite deutet, fühlen sich die Zwinglianer im Stich gelassen, zumal Bucer seine scharfe Kritik an deren Akzeptanz des Zweiten Kappeler Landfriedens bekräftigt. So muss Bucer sich für die Unterschrift von Schweinfurt vielfach rechtfertigen. Ausführlich und theologisch substantiell tut er dies in seinen Schreiben an Bonifatius Wolfhart, Leo Jud und Heinrich Bullinger.

Dit handboek presenteert een methode om kritisch om te gaan met de overvloed aan informatie waarmee we vandaag geconfronteerd worden, maar ook met de projectie van deze situatie naar een ver en nabij verleden. Hoe kunnen we bronnen op het spoor komen, hoe kunnen we ze kritisch benaderen, en vooral: hoe moeten we optreden als bronnen onderling contradictorische informatie geven? Hoe kunnen we, met andere woorden, overgaan tot het confronteren van uiteenlopende getuigenissen over dezelfde gebeurtenissen, om uiteindelijk tot een interpretatie te komen van de feiten en hun motieven die zo dicht mogelijk bij de waarheid aanleunt? Het tweede deel gaat in op de historische synthese, en meer bepaald op de manier waarop samenlevingen zich in de loop der eeuwen het verleden hebben voorgesteld. Ook de ontwikkeling van de 'geschiedenis' als autonoom wetenschapsgebied komt aan bod: in welke mate hebben ideologische, politieke en filosofische overtuigingen mee gestalte gegeven aan het beeld dat we hebben van het verleden?
