Overseas department of France in Amazonia and 'ultraperipheral region' of the EU, Guyane (French Guiana) is at the juncture of Europe, the Caribbean and South America. This collection of essays explores historical and conceptual locations of Guyane, as a relational space characterised by dynamics of interaction and conflict between the local, the national and the global. Does Guyane have, or has it had, its own place in the world, or is it a borderland which can only make sense in relation to elsewhere: to France and its colonial history, for example, or to African and other diasporas, or as a 'margin' of Europe? This edited collection studies Guyane from multiple historical and contemporary perspectives.

La construction par Électricité de France du barrage de Petit Saut en Guyane a donné lieu à la première grande opération d’archéologie préventive (1990- 1995) jamais conduite dans un département français d’outre-mer dont l’histoire était jusqu’alors très mal connue. Ce volume présente, pour les quatre derniers siècles de notre ère, les résultats de ces recherches menées dans le bassin du Sinnamary. Fondée sur le dépouillement d’archives, de récits de voyageurs, de cartes anciennes et sur des prospections et fouilles archéologiques, cette étude apporte des éléments nouveaux sur l’histoire de cette partie de l’Amérique : la formation de la colonie aux XVIIe et XVIIIe s., son peuplement, son économie et sa culture matérielle ; le développement de l’industrie aurifère à partir du XIXe s., la Guyane apparaissant dès lors comme une « nouvelle Californie » ; le bagne de Saut Tigre créé en 1933 où des prisonniers politiques annamites travailleront jusqu’en 1944 à l’aménagement du territoire de l’Inini. L’ouvrage comprend en outre un important dictionnaire des toponymes qui constitue une base documentaire sans précédent. Un second volume sera prochainement consacré aux sites amérindiens découvert au cours de cette même opération. The construction of the dam at Petit Saut by Électricité de France in the French Guyane gave place to an important archaeological rescue operation. Carried out from 1990 to 1995, this was the largest ever programme for an overseas French department of which the history was scarcely known. This volume represents the results of these researches in the Sinnamary river basin for the last four centuries of our millenium. Based on archives, travellers tales, old maps and archaeological work, this study brings new elements to the history of this part of South America : the formation of the colony during the 17th and 18th centuries, its settlement, its economy and material culture. The Matawai Maroon Johannes King (ca. 1830-1898) taught himself to read and write at an advanced age. He wanted to bridge the gap between the generations by publishing his 'Book of Horrors' ( Skrekiboekoe ) and the present book which has been given the title Life at Marispaston . King wanted to explain the root of the problems between him and his elder brother, Chief Noah Andrai, representatives respectively of the church and the state at the village level. King wanted to justify his life in the eyes of the church, the EBG-Moravian Brethren, and his fellow Maroons. This book is an important contribution to the church history of Suriname, yet also offers insights into the history of the Maroon communities in Suriname. This book is one of the first original works in Sranantongo.
