L'hétérogénéité profonde des réalités dont les sciences sociales ont à se saisir crée du trouble, mais elle laisse surtout entrevoir de nouvelles lignes de recherche. Ce que nous pointons, ce n'est pas la variabilité qui émerge nécessairement d'une enquête empirique, et qu'un chercheur s'attache en partie à réduire. Ce ne sont pas non plus les interdépendances entre des formes de matérialité non sociales et les objets que les sciences sociales ont placés au cœur de leur investigation (cultures, groupes, institutions, interactions sociales, dispositions). Par hétérogénéité profonde nous entendons cette consistance particulière des objets qui, associant les unes aux autres des entités aux capacités modulables relevant de catégories différentes, parfois au-delà de dualités fortement établies (matière et langage, nature et culture, technique et politique), obligent les chercheurs à imaginer les notions et les méthodes propres à les appréhender. En somme, des objets « composés ». Pointer cette hétérogénéité et s'y affronter a été une préoccupation de Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze et Félix Guattari, puis de la théorie de l'acteur-réseau, de la sociologie des régimes d'engagement, et plus récemment de l'anthropologie des agencements globaux. Mais les fronts aujourd'hui se déplacent. Venant de différents horizons de l'anthropologie et de la sociologie, issus des mondes anglophones et francophones, des chercheurs éprouvent le besoin de re-conceptualiser les notions et de redéfinir les enquêtes qui leur sont associées. Trois directions s'en dégagent, autour de trois concepts clefs - agencements, dispositifs, assemblages –, qui forgent un regard inédit sur les lieux où règnent les objets composés : des expériences de la vulnérabilité aux lieux d'énonciation du droit, des laboratoires scientifiques à l'expression des impératifs religieux, des milieux urbains, industriels et agricoles à l'exercice du pouvoir politique. Les activités de création mettent en avant le talent individuel mais reposent aussi sur des dispositifs et des organisations. L’investigation soutenue par les ministères de la Culture et de l’Industrie a pris la forme d’un séminaire Création à l’École de Paris du management. Les résultats portent d’abord sur les processus de création et la manière dont les activités de création peuvent s’inscrire dans des projets et des entreprises dans un double mouvement de divergence et de convergence. On examine ensuite les liens entre création et structures en examinant comment est géré cet équilibre divergence-convergence et sont assumées des tâches spécifiques comme la gestion de la nécessaire abondance créative et, partant, l’échec de nombre de projets, la détection et la sélection des talents. La création s’en trouve à la fois encadrée en même temps qu’elle peut trouver de nouveaux espaces de développement. While creative activities necessarily involve individual talent, they also need the support of systems and organisations. The investigation backed by the Ministries of Culture and Industry took the form of a seminar entitled ‘Artistic Creation’ held at the Paris School of Management. Its conclusions concerned, on the one hand, creative processes and the way these – in a dual movement of divergence and convergence – tie into projects and enterprises and, on the other, the connections between creation and structures. How can the divergence/convergence equation be resolved? How can specific problems such as management of the requisite creative abundance (and the corollary failure of numerous projects), talent discovery and talent selection be handled? Artistic creation is thus kept within limits while at the same time finding new room in which to develop.

La notion de représentation demeure plus que jamais sujette à caution : imprécise, elle manque de tranchant conceptuel ; idéologiquement marquée, elle charrie une anthropologie implicite que l'ère du soupçon n'a pas manqué de dénoncer. Dans le même temps, elle est constamment utilisée, dans des acceptions d'ailleurs très diverses, et cela y compris dans des domaines spécialisés comme les études littéraires, artistiques et philosophiques. Les recherches dans ces domaines sont ainsi grevées par un même impensé ou, à tout le moins, par un même flou conceptuel, auquel voudrait pallier le présent ouvrage, en proposant un repérage de ce que signifie encore - pour autant que ce soit le cas - l'acte de représenter à l'époque contemporaine. Une telle notion demeure-telle opératoire ? Dans chacun des articles s'entrecroisent ainsi une série de questions majeures pour notre temps : l'articulation entre subjectivité et représentation, les logiques du signe et systèmes de visibilité concurrents, la valeur performative et instituante de l'énonciation comme réponse à l'emprise de la représentation, les formes contemporaines de la présence, la valeur régulatrice de l'art en tant qu'acte représentatif.

Nineteenth-century outlaw Ned Kelly is perhaps Australia's most famous historical figure. Ever since he went on the run in 1878 his story has been repeated time and again, in every conceivable medium. Although the value of his memory has been hotly contested - and arguably because of this - he remains perhaps the main national icon of Australia. Kelly's flamboyant crimes turned him into a popular hero for many Australians during his lifetime and far beyond: a symbol of freedom, anti authoritarianism, anti imperialism; a Robin Hood, a Jesse James, a Che Guevara. Others have portrayed him as a villain, a gangster, a terrorist. His latest incarnation has been as WikiLeaks founder and fellow Australian "cyber outlaw" Julian Assange. Despite the huge number of representations of Kelly - from rampant newspaper reporting of the events, to the iconic Sidney Nolan paintings, to a movie starring Mick Jagger, to contemporary urban street art - this is the first work to take this corpus of material itself as a subject of analysis. The fascinating case of this young outlaw provides an important opportunity to further our understanding of the dynamics of cultural memory. The book explains the processes by which the cultural memory of Ned Kelly was made and has developed over time, and how it has related to formations and negotiations of national identity. It breaks new ground in memory studies in the first place by showing that cultural memories are formed and develop through tangles of relations, what Basu terms memory dispositifs. In introducing the concept of the memory dispositif, this volume brings together and develops the work of Foucault, Deleuze, and Agamben on the dispositif, along with relevant concepts from the field of memory studies such as allochronism, colonial aphasia, and multidirectionality, the memory site - especially as developed by Ann Rigney - and Jan Assmann's figure of memory. Secondly, this work makes important headway in our understanding of the relationships between cultural memory and national identity, at a time when matters of identity appear to be more urgent and fraught than ever. In doing so, it shows that national identities are never purely national but are always sub- and transnational. The Ned Kelly memory dispositif has made complex and conflicting contributions to constructions of national identity. Ever since his outlawry, the identities invested in Kelly and those invested in the Australian nation have, in a two-way dynamic, fused into and strengthened each other, so that Kelly is in many ways a symbol for the national identity. Kelly has come to stand for an anti-establishment, working class, subaltern, Irish-inflected national identity. At the same time he has come to represent and enforce the whiteness, hyper-heterosexual masculinity and violence of "Australianness". Basu shows that Kelly has therefore always functioned in both radical and conservative ways, often both at once: a turbulent, Janus-faced figure.

Campus Medius explores and expands the possibilities of digital cartography in cultural and media studies. Simon Ganahl documents the development of the project from a historical case study to a mapping platform. Based on the question of what a media experience is, the concepts of the apparatus (dispositif) and the actor-network are translated into a data model. A time-space of twenty-four hours in Vienna in May 1933, marked by a so-called "Turks Deliverance Celebration" (Türkenbefreiungsfeier), serves as an empirical laboratory.
