It is almost universally accepted that scientific activities and discoveries are the most important sources of productivity growth and increased material welfare. Throughout history, women have been making significant contributions to scientific discoveries, innovation and inventions. However, they do not feature prominently in the inventive and innovative literatures except as exceptional examples. Current literature on scientific activities and discoveries, various facets of R&D or the management of technological change and scientific activities tends to ignore the gender dimension. Indeed, a review of the literature suggests that there is, in general, an implicit assumption that scientific activities and discoveries are largely the preserves of men perhaps reflecting the engineer-driven designs of manufacturing and male dominance of science/technology industries and occupations. Accordingly, to contribute to current research and debate, this book focuses on the challenges facing women who seek to create innovative entrepreneurial ventures, whilst also celebrating their scientific activities and contribution to technological advancement, society, and economic development as a whole. It aims to investigate and demonstrate the innovative and inventive achievements of women in the knowledge based society.

This book, 'Manifeste à propos des femmes en STIM', is a collection of 50 impactful texts addressing the status of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) within the Francophone community in Canada. The authors, including Louise Lafortune, Audrey Groleau, and Claire Deschênes, explore significant issues such as equity, diversity, and inclusion, as well as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on women in STEM fields. The book highlights historical and contemporary challenges faced by women, particularly those who are doubly marginalized, such as Indigenous women. It also discusses the importance of work-life balance, the role of women in decision-making positions, and strategies to foster greater engagement of women in STEM. Aimed at a broad audience, the book serves as a call to action for society to achieve equity and inclusivity for women in STEM.

Flight Paths to Success profiles the personal journeys of 33 women who have been, and continue to be, successful in aviation, space, and academia. Each woman was asked to select one question of several questions in five categories: personal career insight, work-life balance, mentorship/sponsorship, avoiding a career stall, and powering through challenging situations. Each woman shared her unique experiences about work-life integration, resilience, career changes, relocation, continuing education, and career advancement. While reading their stories, we saw that there were many flight paths to success and each woman navigated her own way by charting her own course and committing to it. Their stories were published as they wrote them in their own words.

Under what conditions can gender equality and social gender justice in science and research in general be achieved? What concrete and effective measures are there to undermine some contrary practices? The book is aimed at practitioners and researchers alike who want to find out about known obstacles and how they can be circumvented as well as about the latest findings on European gender equality strategies.

Why are there so few women scientists? Persisting differences between women's and men's experiences in science make this question as relevant today as it ever was. This book sets out to answer this question, and to propose solutions for the future. Based on extensive research, it emphasizes that science is an intensely social activity. Despite the scientific ethos of universalism and inclusion, scientists and their institutions are not immune to the prejudices of society as a whole. By presenting women's experiences at all key career stages - from childhood to retirement - the authors reveal the hidden barriers, subtle exclusions and unwritten rules of the scientific workplace, and the effects, both professional and personal, that these have on the female scientist. This important book should be read by all scientists - both male and female - and sociologists, as well as women thinking of embarking on a scientific career.

This sixth volume of the CODESRIA Gender Series is a collection of discourses, perspectives, practices and policies on the role of the female gender in science and technology, particularly in the African context.
