"Through extensive original research, Melissa Feinberg assembles a compelling account of how early Czech progress in women's rights, tied to democratic reforms, eventually lost momentum in the face of political challenges facing the state in a young republic. Elusive Equality offers a prism to help sharpen our view of the evolution of twentieth-century European democracy and provides a cautionary tale for all who want to see democratic governments thrive."--Jacket

The Velislav Bible is one of the most beautiful medieval Bohemian manuscripts. It is a heavily illustrated manuscript that contains only short selections of the text, that instruct the reader about the story depicted. The last picture in the manuscript shows a man kneeling before St. Catherine, identified as Velislav, hence the name of the manuscript. The Bible comprises stories from the Books of Genesis and Exodus, visions of Daniel, and the stories of Samson as well as of Judith. The narrative of the Antichrist precedes the Christological part. The New Testament continues with the Book of Revelation, stories following the Ascension of Christ, and key events from the lives of St. Peter and St. Paul. The manuscript closes with the legend of St. Wenceslas, the patron saint of Bohemia. The essays in The Velislav Bible, Finest Picture-Bible of the Late Middle Ages: Biblia depicta as Devotional, Mnemonic and Study Tool analyze the manuscript from historical, textual, art-historical, and iconographic perspectives. However, a shared concern of all the authors is to think about its functions. An edition of the Latin titulis is being published here for the first time.

The papers published here were presented at an international symposium held in 2002 at Heidelberg, at which international experts investigated the literary output at the end of the 14th century and at the beginning of the 15th of the first three universities founded within the medieval Holy Roman Empire north of the Alps: Prague, Vienna and Heidelberg. The articles provide insights into a great variety of academic texts till now rarely examined and the specific conditions of their production, and trace the interrelations between these universities which were narrowly interlinked by many itinerant teachers and scholars. The papers deal with the scholarly Latin texts, which often originated directly from teaching, as well as the vernacular texts stimulated or influenced by academic learning in the practice fields of preaching, religious doctrine, edification, pastoral theology, and general popularizing of scholarship.

The present collection, divided into three thematic sections, includes twenty-one studies on the history of the University of Prague from its foundation in 1348 to the 16th century. The first section is devoted to the birth of the university, its first institutions, the growth of the earliest colleges and the victory of the Reformist party. The second part concentrates on the curriculum, examinations, graduations and annual disputations of the Faculty of Liberal Arts. Section three deals with university polemics about universalia realia, mainly in relation to the scholarly and literary activity of Jerome of Prague (+ 1416).

This is the first book-length study of the influential cultural and religious exchanges which took place between England and Bohemia following Richard II's marriage to Anne of Bohemia in 1382. The ensuing growth in communication between the two kingdoms initially enabled new ideas of religion to flourish in both countries but eventually led the English authorities to suppress heresy. This exciting project has been made possible by the discovery of new manuscripts after the opening up of Czech archives over the past twenty years. It is the only study to analyze the Lollard-Hussite exchange with an eye to the new opportunities for international travel and correspondence to which the Great Schism gave rise, and examines how the use of propaganda and The Council of Constance brought an end to this communication by securing the condemnation of heretics such as John Wyclif.

This book explores the remarkable interconnections of the Czechoslovak environment and the work and legacy of the Vienna Circle on the philosophical, scientific and artistic level. The Czech lands and later Czechoslovakia were the living and working space for the predecessors and catalysts for Logical Empiricism, such as Bernard Bolzano, Ernst Mach and Albert Einstein, along with key figures in the Vienna Circle such as Philipp Frank and Rudolf Carnap. Moreover, Prague hosted important academic events in which Logical Empiricism was presented to the public, such as the September 1929 1st Conference on the Epistemology of the Exact Sciences, which launched the key manifesto, The Vienna Circle. The Scientific Conception of the World. In addition, this book investigates both the positive and negative receptions of Logical Empiricism within Czech and Slovak intellectual circles. The volume features a selection of contributions to the international conference, The Vienna Circle in Czechoslovakia, held in Pilsen, Czech Republic, in February 2015. These essays are supplemented by two texts of vivid personal memoirs by Nina Holton and Ladislav Tondl. The book is of interest to scholars and researchers interested in the history of philosophy and science in central Europe and the philosophy of science and the Logical Empiricism of the Vienna Circle.

Analytická monografie rozebírá zprávy britských diplomatů z Prahy roku 1945, které vynikaly obdivuhodnou schopností na základě analýzy shromážděných informací postihnout podstatu československých poválečných problémů. Zprávy si nejvíce všímaly československého státoprávního uspořádání a politického systému, vztahu Československa k SSSR, USA, Velké Británii a dalším státům, postavení německé menšiny, vojenských záležitostí, rekonstrukce či složitého propletence vzájemných ekonomických, finančních a obchodních vztahů mezi Velkou Británií a ČSR. Stranou však nezůstával ani život a problémy běžného občana, což představuje dosud nevyužitý pramen k poznání každodennosti v bezprostředně poválečném období.
