Abstract

This practical new book provides much-needed, practical, hands-on experience capturing analysis and design in UML. It holds the hands of engineers making the difficult leap from developing in C to the higher-level and more robust Unified Modeling Language, thereby supporting professional development for engineers looking to broaden their skill-sets in order to become more saleable in the job market. It provides a laboratory environment through a series of progressively more complex exercises that act as building blocks, illustrating the various aspects of UML and its application to re

Abstract

Over the last decade, advances in the semiconductor fabrication process have led to the realization of true system-on-a-chip devices. But the theories, methods and tools for designing, integrating and verifying these complex systems have not kept pace with our ability to build them. System level design is a critical component in the search for methods to develop designs more productively. However, there are a number of challenges that must be overcome in order to implement system level modeling. This book directly addresses that need by developing organizing principles for understandin

Abstract

Over recent years, embedded systems have gained an enormous amount of processing power and functionality. Many of the formerly external components can now be integrated into a single System-on-Chip. This tendency has resulted in a dramatic reduction in the size and cost of embedded systems. As a unique technology, the design of embedded systems is an essential element of many innovations. Embedded System Design: Topics, Techniques and Trends presents the technical program of the International Embedded Systems Symposium (IESS) 2007 held in Irvine, California. IESS is a unique forum to present novel ideas, exchange timely research results, and discuss the state of the art and future trends in the field of embedded systems. Contributors and participants from both industry and academia take active part in this symposium. The IESS conference is organized by the Computer Systems Technology committee (TC10) of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). Timley topics, techniques and trends in embedded system design are covered by the chapters in this book, including design methodology, specification and modeling, embedded software and hardware synthesis, networks-on-chip, distributed and networked systems, and system verification and validation. Particular emphaisis is paid to automotive and medical applications. A set of actual case studies and special aspects in embedded system design are included as well.

Abstract

Real-Time Applications with Stochastic Task Execution Times presents three approaches to the analysis of the deadline miss ratio of applications with stochastic task execution times. Each of the three approaches fits best to a different context. The first approach is an exact one and is efficiently applicable to monoprocessor systems. The second approach is an approximate one, which allows for designer-controlled trade-off between analysis accuracy and analysis speed. It is efficiently applicable to multiprocessor systems. The third approach is less accurate but sufficiently fast in order to be placed inside optimisation loops. Based on the last approach, we propose a heuristic for task mapping and priority assignment for deadline miss ratio minimisation.

Abstract

Welcome to the proceedings of the 2005 International Conference on Emb- ded Software and Systems (ICESS 2005) held in Xian, China, December 16-18, 2005. With the advent of VLSI system level integration and system-on-chip, the center of gravity of the computer industry is now moving from personal c- puting into embedded computing. Embedded software and systems are incre- ingly becoming a key technological component of all kinds of complex technical systems, ranging from vehicles, telephones, aircraft, toys, security systems, to medical diagnostics, weapons, pacemakers, climate control systems, etc. The ICESS 2005 conference provided a premier international forum for - searchers, developers and providers from academia and industry to address all resulting profound challenges; to present and discuss their new ideas, - search results, applications and experience; to improve international com- nication and cooperation; and to promote embedded software and system - dustrialization and wide applications on all aspects of embedded software and systems.

Abstract

Recent technological developments in sensing, communications, control and computation have created an emerging class of complex systems hereon called networked embedded systems. These systems can be roughly described as collections of spatially distributed sensors, actuators and controllers whose behaviour is coordinated through wired or wireless communication links. This integration between different technologies and scientific domains presents new and challenging fundamental problems underlying the theoretical foundations for this class of systems. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers working of different aspects of networked embedded systems in order to exchange research experiences and to identify the main scientific challenges in this exciting new area.

Abstract

This book offers readers broad coverage of techniques to model, verify and validate the behavior and performance of complex distributed embedded systems.  The authors attempt to bridge the gap between the three disciplines of model-based design, real-time analysis and model-driven development, for a better understanding of the ways in which new development flows can be constructed, going from system-level modeling to the correct and predictable generation of a distributed implementation, leveraging current and future research results.     Describes integration of heterogeneous models; Discusses synthesis of task model implementations and code implementations; Compares model-based design vs. model-driven approaches; Explains how to enforce correctness by construction in the functional and time domains; Includes optimization techniques for control performance.
