Abstract

Phaedra * Oedipus * Medea * Trojan Women * Hercules Furens * ThyestesSeneca's plays are the product of a sensational, frightening, and oppressive period of history. Tutor to the emperor Nero, Seneca lived through uncertain and violent times, and his dramas depict the extremes of human behaviour. Rape, suicide, child-killing, incestuous love, madness and mutilation afflict the characters, who are obsessed and destroyed by their feelings. Passion is constantly set against reason, and passion wins out. Seneca forces us to think about the difference betweencompromise and hypocrisy, about what happ

Abstract

"After centuries of neglect there is renewed interest in the life and works of Lucius Annaeus Seneca (or Seneca the Younger, c. 4 BCE-65 CE). At one time an advisor at court to Nero, Seneca and his political career came to ruin when he was implicated in a later plot to kill the capricious and matricidal emperor and compelled to commit suicide. Discredited through collusion, or at least association, with a notorious and tyrannical regime, Seneca's ideas were for a time also considered derivative of Greek Stoicism and thus inferior to the real thing. In this first in-depth introduction to be published for many years, Christopher Star shows what a remarkable statesman, dramatist and philosopher his subject actually was. Seneca's original contributions to political philosophy and the philosophy of the emotions were considerable. He was a favourite authority for many early Christian authors, and he is a key figure in the history of ideas and the Renaissance, as well as in literature and drama. This new survey does full justice to his significance."--Page 4 of cover.

Abstract

This volume contains ten essays by an international group of scholars on various aspects of the work of L. Annaeus Seneca the Younger, the famous (some would say, notorious) Roman playwright, philosopher, and politician of the Claudian and Neronian periods. Approaching Seneca from a number of different angles, the authors endeavor both to illuminate individual aspects of the writer's enormous output and to discern common themes among the many different genres practiced by Seneca. Given its interdisciplinary approach, the collection is of interest to classicists, historians, and historians of philosophy alike.

Abstract

Abstract

Often noticed, frequently criticized, the descriptions of physical violence in Seneca's philosophical work De ira and Lucan's civil war epic De bello civili irritate until today. Only looking at the theory of rhetoric, the use of exempla and the staging of violence allows an approach to ancient reception attitudes and reveals the connections between enumeration and visualizability, violence and the the arousal of the emotions.
