This book hopes to provide other small-scale schools with replicable and low-cost local experience, meanwhile, to summarize and explore the development model and path of rural education in China. As the “nerve endings” of Chinese education system, rural small-scale schools have unique important values in guaranteeing equity in education and serving the compulsory education in rural areas. By telling ten vivid stories of the transforming path of rural small-scale schools in China, and inviting different experts and peers to comment on the stories, this book shows how the rural small-scale schools acted according to circumstances to improve education quality, how they broke through the difficult situation and got better, and how they achieved the status of “small and beautiful” and “small and good.” It tries to explore a new path for rural education changing and aims to provide some inspirations on rural and urban education development. .

This book examines how the Lycée autogéré de Paris, an experimental high school established in 1982 which claims to implement critical and democratic pedagogical practices, contributes to the development of counter-hegemonic educational and social practices. The author presents and analyses significant discursive data on the school’s pedagogical practice, focusing specifically on triangulation, from general assemblies to official texts, pedagogic projects and everyday interactions inside and outside the institution. He then argues that the discourses of the self-managed high school tend to be critical of the French state’s neoliberal discourse on education while favouring the development of practices of solidarity within the local and broader context of the institution. The book will be of interest to students and scholars in the fields of sociology of education, sociolinguistics and education for social justice.

This edited volume brings together authors from various cultural backgrounds to address the racialized roots of the (un)civil war in American society and schooling. While exposing substractive schooling practices, it also provides counter-narrative school curriculum that builds cross-cultural bridges and connects learners across racial lines. It also includes critical reading and discussion questions for students in the fields of education, school leadership, sociology, ethnic studies, history, school teacher and counselor preparation, psychology, and public policy. In bringing together a wide collaboration of authors, the text models the practices of inclusion that must occur in order to transform American public education beyond its racialized roots. Amy Murray holds an EdD in Educational Leadership from California State University, Sacramento, USA. Rose Borunda is Professor Emeritus at California State University, Sacramento, USA.

Reaching deep into the wealth of Chinese philosophical wisdom, this book offers rich insights into a way of educating that has found staunch advocates among educators through the ages. The ‘free-spirit education’, which calls on educators to respect and nurture the natural goodness of each child, affords an educational principle that is embedded in one of the most important Confucian classics: The Doctrine of the Mean. This book analyzes the meaning, history, principles, and educational application of ‘free-spirit education’ and also explores its contemporary development in the context of a school improvement initiative. It introduces the intellectual origins of ‘free-spirit education’, the application in ’process-based inductive teaching’ and cases from the field. It presents the collection of pedagogical cases that are rooted in the traditions of Chinese philosophic inquiry and viewed through the lens of contemporary pedagogy for human development. This book is a useful reference for university faculty, educational researchers, school teachers and leaders, graduate and undergraduate students in curriculum studies and in philosophy, social science, and education, curriculum developers, and all those educators who are interested in understanding ‘free-spirit education’—a key component of the humanistic traditions of Chinese education.

This book provides important advice to scientists at all stages of their careers on how to be a more effective and impactful researcher. It provides tips on: designing, performing, and analyzing experiments; writing, submitting and revising manuscripts; preparing and giving scientific talks and posters; writing grant proposals; and writing and defending a graduate thesis. It also provides advice on soft skills, like communication, networking, creativity, critical thinking, and working in teams. A major emphasis of the book is the importance of writing and publishing scientific manuscripts, as this is the main way that scientific knowledge is disseminated, as well as being an important element for building a strong curriculum vitae. The book should be an extremely valuable resource for graduate students throughout their studies but should also be useful for postdocs and professors who want to hone their research skills. The book is written by three scientists from the same family who are each at different stages in their careers and can therefore provide different perspectives. David Julian McClements is a distinguished professor who is currently the most highly cited author in Food Science in the world. He has published over 1300 scientific articles and numerous books. Jake McClements is beginning his career as a lecturer in the United Kingdom, while Isobelle Farrell McClements is just starting her career as a graduate student in the United States.

In diesem Open.
