Abstract

After the collapse of Communist rule in 1991, those loyal to the old regime tried to salvage their political dreams by rejecting some aspects of their history and embracing others. Yeltsin and the democrats, although initially hesitant to rely on the patriotic mythmaking they associated with Communist propaganda, also turned to the national past in times of crisis, realizing they needed not only to create new institutions, but also to encourage popular support for them.Kathleen E. Smith examines the use of collective memories in Russian politics during the Yeltsin years, surveying the various issues that became battlegrounds for contending notions of what it means to be Russian. Both the new establishment and its opponents have struggled to shape versions of past events into symbolic political capital. What parts of the Communist past, Smith asks, have proved useful for interpreting political options? Which versions of their history have Russians chosen to cling to, and which Soviet memories have they deliberately tried to forget? What symbols do they hold up as truly Russian? Which will help define the attitudes shaping Russian policy for decades to come?Smith illustrates the potency of memory debates across a broad range of fields-law, politics, art, and architecture. Her case studies include the changing interpretations of the attempted coups of 1991 and 1993, the recasting of the holiday calendar, the controversy over the national anthem, the status of "trophy art" brought to Russia at the end of World War II, and the partisan use of historical symbols in elections.

Abstract

Between the years 2020-2022, various commemorative events of national, regional or local independence have been held, without a meeting that encompasses them. This was the objective of the International Seminar 200 years later. The Andes at the crossroads of the Independences (Seville, December 2021) that we now present in this volume. The purpose of the activity was to analyze and study as a whole the Independence processes in the Andean region and the reciprocal impact of the events in Spain after the Riego uprising in 1820, with the triumph of revolutionary liberalism in Spain and the reestablishment of the Constitution. of Cadiz both in the peninsula and in America. Without forgetting the impact of the liberal revolution in Portugal in 1820, its influence on the independence of Brazil and its repercussion in the Andean region. The Seminar was organized by the Area of American History of the Pablo de Olavide University of Seville, the International University of Andalusia and the La Rábida Group of Ibero-American Universities.

Abstract

The history of Ibadism is still marginalized in Islamic studies, while there has been a significant increase of the available sources from Oman and North Africa. This books provides an overview of the scattered communities that formed the Ibadi archipelago during medieval times. It gives an insight into tribal patterns and power relationships and investigates on the political and social models developed by this school. How did Ibadism justify political dissidence and rebellion and reinterpret the legacy of former Kharijite movements? How did it conceive political collegiality and put this model into practice? How did this minority coexisted and competed with the majority? Switching from the East to the West and from a broad frame of interpretation to local case studies, the volume seeks to better understand the political thought and social patterns that characterized this religious stream. Besides questioning the paradigm of the Imamate, we also explore how stateless societies could be regulated by collective social and religious institutions.

Abstract

The crisis of more than forty years: A recent global history: In a dialogue between History and studies in International Relations, this recent global history begins with the Cold War and the French May '68 uprisings; it continues with the 1973 oil crisis, which, although initially undervalued and disparaged as an increase in the price of oil, is addressed due to its impact on the course of the century and the political responses it generated: the rise of the New Right in the First World, the Soviet Perestroika, the Four Modernizations in China and the Iranian Revolution. Subsequently, the book covers unfinished transitions: the pretension of a unipolar world, the failed World Order and its conflicts, the 2008 crisis and the search for global governance after the crack.

Abstract

A major realignment is taking place in the way we understand the state in Indonesia. New studies on local politics, ethnicity, the democratic transition, corruption, Islam, popular culture, and other areas hint at novel concepts of the state, though often without fully articulating them. This book captures several dimensions of this shift. One reason for the new thinking is a fresh wind that has altered state studies generally. People are posing new kinds of questions about the state and developing new methodologies to answer them. Another reason for this shift is that Indonesia itself has changed, probably more than most people recognize. It looks more democratic, but also more chaotic and corrupt, than it did during the militaristic New Order of 1966-1998. State of Authority offers a range of detailed case studies based on fieldwork in many different settings around the archipelago. The studies bring to life figures of authority who have sought to carve out positions of power for themselves using legal and illegal means. These figures include village heads, informal slum leaders, district heads, parliamentarians, and others. These individuals negotiate in settings where the state is evident and where it is discussed: coffee houses, hotel lounges, fishing waters, and street-side stalls. These case studies, and the broader trend in scholarship of which they are a part, allow for a new theorization of the state in Indonesia that more adequately addresses the complexity of political life in this vast archipelago nation. State of Authority demonstrates that the state of Indonesia is not monolithic, but is constituted from the ground up by a host of local negotiations and symbolic practices.

Abstract

Abstract

As we commemorate the Bicentennial of the Greek Revolution, this study by Pascal Kitromilidès of the reception of the French Revolution and the influence it had on the birth of nationalism in the Balkans is timely. The 1990 Greek edition was very much in tune with the events of the day, from the 1989 commemorations to mark the Bicentennial of the French Revolution to the upheaval in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe in the late eighties and early nineties. This revised edition in French invites us to take another look at this period of our recent European past by examining the links between revolutionary ideas and the construction of nationalisms, as the work of any historian as a rule tends to converse with the issues of their own era. This re-examination of the politics of the Enlightenment brings a new perspective, in the light of other contexts and shifts the focus by using the Balkans as a starting point. It reveals a new vision of how French revolutionary ideas were received in Europe and how that reception was criticised by liberal thinkers, as well as providing a more thorough perspective on the specific role Hellenism played in the new landscape that emerged between the end of the 18th century and the middle of the 19th century. The eminently revolutionary ideas of nationhood and freedom had a particular resonance in the Balkans and in South-Eastern Europe.

Abstract

This book offers a ground-breaking approach to royalism and popular politics in Europe and the Americas during the Age of Revolutions. It shows how royalist and counterrevolutionary movements did not propose a mere return to the past, but rather introduced an innovative way of addressing the demands and expectations of various social groups. Ordinary people were involved in the war and adapted the traditional imaginary of the monarchy to craft new models of political participation. This edited collection brings together scholars from France, Spain, Norway, and Mexico, to provide a transatlantic comparative perspective. It is a must-read for scholars and students looking to discover the lesser-known side of the Age of Revolutions, and the motivations of those who fought in the name of the king. Andoni Artola is Assistant Professor at the University of the Basque Country, Spain. Álvaro París is Assistant Professor at the University of Salamanca, Spain.
