Since the publication of the first edition in 1983, several new and exciting developments have taken place in the field of plant tissue culture, which forms a major component of what is now called plant biotechnology. The revised edition presents updated information on theoretical, practical and applied aspects of plant tissue culture. Each chapter has been thoroughly revised and, as before, is written in lucid language, includes relevant media protocols, and is profusely illustrated with self-explanatory diagrams and original photographs. This book includes three new chapters: ""Variant selec

Arabidopsis has long been acknowledged as the 'Botanical Drosophila' with its small genome, low levels of repetitive DNA, small size and fast generation time it is an ideal molecular genetic tool for the analysis of development in higher plants. Arabidopsis: A Practical Approach provides an introduction to most of the key techniques required for the use of Arabidopsis as an experimental system. It gives a basic introduction to the optimal growth; conditions and genetic resources available for Arabidopsis, how this material should be handled, maintained and used. Individual chapters describe strategies for the identification, mapping (using multi-marker lines and recombinant inbreds), and characterisation of different mutants by microscopy, molecular cytogenetics and gene; expression analysis. Different cloning strategies, using transposons, T-DNA and map position are described in detail. Sequencing of the Arabidopsis genome will be completed in 2000 and bioinformatics are of key importance; the tools that are available and where they can be found on the Web are presented.

Advances in Plant Tissue Culture: Current Developments and Future Trends provides a complete and up-to-date text on all basic and applied aspects of plant tissue cultures and their latest application implications. It will be beneficial for students and early-career researchers of plant sciences and plant/agricultural biotechnology. Plant tissue culture has emerged as a sustainable way to meet the requirements of fresh produces, horticultural crops, medicinal or ornamental plants. Nowadays, plant tissue culture is an emerging filed applied in various aspects, including sustainable agriculture, plant breeding, horticulture and forestry. This book covers the latest technology, broadly applied for crop improvement, clonal propagation, Somatic hybridization Embryo rescue, Germplasm conservation, genetic conservation, or for the preservation of endangered species. However, these technologies also play a vital role in breaking seed dormancy over conventional methods of conservation.

It is now more than twenty years since the first edition of this work appeared and nearly fifteen since the second. Whilst much of the information in those editions has stood the test of time, inevitably, because of the pace of research, a new edition is clearly timely. This is true, not only because many more species have been the subject of propagation studies, but because the background to the field – with which this volume deals – has changed almost out of all recognition. In particular, our knowledge of plant development, genetics physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology has expanded exponentially – often through work on mutants of Arabidopsis – and opened up many new avenues for the plant propagator to explore. Equally, the commercial significance of plant propagation has increased significantly. As an example, in the second edition there was a single chapter on plant growth regulators – in this there are three, reflecting the fact that not only is there more information on those PGRs we recognised in 1993, but that several new ones are now known. Equally, fifteen years ago we knew little of the molecular basis of plant development e. g. flower and shoot development, in this edition it has merited a whole chapter, much of which relates to discoveries in the last decade. Because of these factors, it was felt that a different approach was required for this edition.

This textbook is clearly structured with fourteen richly illustrated chapters and practical examples for easy understanding and direct implementation. The methods and findings developed in the authors’ group are presented in detailed, revised chapters. Readers will find valuable updates on the molecular basis of biotechnological processes, secondary metabolite production and genetic engineering. In addition, the basic principles of important biotechnologies, as well as examples of specially designed crops that deliver improved productivity under stress conditions, are presented. This second edition sets the direction for future research on the basic aspects of plant tissue culture and its applications in the fields of secondary metabolite production and genetic engineering. It provides both general and specific information for students, teachers, academic researchers and industrial teams who are interested in new developments in plant tissue culture and its applications. .
