Critical Reflections on the Paranormal discusses various aspects of paranormal phenomena such as telepathy, psychokinesis, trance-mediumship, near-death experiences, and past-life memories. It reflects on what is reasonable to believe about them, and why; and it suggests what changes they might demand in our worldview, if these phenomena are accepted as genuine. The collection includes essays written by Susan Armstrong, Heather Botting, Stephen Braude, Don Evans, David Ray Griffin, James Horne, Terence Penelhum, and the editors.

This book is based on the author's ten-year research into the politics of belief surrounding paranormal ideas. Through a detailed examination of the participants, issues, strategies and underlying factors that constitute the contemporary paranormal debate, the book explores the struggle surrounding the status of paranormal phenomena. It examines, on the one hand, how the principal arbiters of religious and scientific truths - the Church and the academic establishment - reject paranormal idea...

"Krister Dylan Knapp provides [an] analytical and contextualized account of James's psychical research. Knapp argues that psychical research permeated James's life: while James always maintained a critical stance towards claims of paranormal phenomena, its study was central to his relationships familial and professional, shaped his unique intellectual disposition, and threaded together his life's intellectual trajectory"--

Since the early nineteenth century, mesmerists, mediums and psychics have exhibited extraordinary phenomena. These have been demonstrated, reported and disputed by every modern generation. We continue to wonder why people believe in such things, while others wonder why they are dismissed so easily. Extraordinary Beliefs takes a historical approach to an ongoing psychological problem: why do people believe in extraordinary phenomena? It considers the phenomena that have been associated with mesmerism, spiritualism, psychical research and parapsychology. By drawing upon conjuring theory, frame analysis and discourse analysis, it examines how such phenomena have been made convincing in demonstration and report, and then disputed endlessly. It argues that we cannot understand extraordinary beliefs unless we properly consider the events in which people believe, and what people believe about them. And it shows how, in constructing and maintaining particular beliefs about particular phenomena, we have been in the business of constructing ourselves.

'The space of the paranormal can indeed be frightening. But psychoanalysis specializes in entering and tolerating frightening spaces. Why should this one be an exception?'-Nick Totton from the Foreword. This fascinating and long-overdue work on paranormal phenomena - a topic ignored in mainstream psychoanalytic media since the 1950s - aims to demonstrate the real relevance of the paranormal to psychoanalysis and clinical practice. The author has gathered together a wide range of psychoanalytic approaches, including Freudian, Lacanian, Jungian and Reichian, to present an impressive collection of thought-provoking articles on this controversial subject. Various aspects of the paranormal are investigated, such as dream telepathy, parapsychology, UFO contactee stories and alien abductions (the only wholly sceptical paper in this collection, presented by two Parisian Lacanian analysts), and synchronicity. There is also a philosophical essay concerned with the concept of the paranormal and the surrounding psychoanalytic ideas. This is a well-informed and well-argued work that will engage its readers in a stimulating debate on the disputed concept of the paranormal.
