So unwillkürlich es im konkreten Fall erscheinen mag: Lachen in der Literatur und als Effekt, nicht zuletzt auf dem Theater, ist ein Gegenstand komplexer Inszenierungen und überdies Fluchtpunkt poetologischer, anthropologischer und sogar sozialprogrammatischer Ansprüche. Es ist mit einer ganzen Reihe von Gattungen und literarischen Formen verknüpft, von Fastnachtspiel, Posse und Komödie über Parodien und Satiren bis hin zum Sprachspiel oder essayistischen Witz. Weitgefächert sind auch die möglichen Ursachen des Lachens: Wer lacht, kann dies spottend, aus Übermut, angesichts komischer Unfälle oder aus Verzweiflung tun. Dass sich hinter dem Lachen einiges Ernsthafte verbergen kann, wusste bereits Lessings Minna von Barnhelm. Die Literaturwissenschaft hat sich mit dem Lachen trotzdem häufig schwergetan, weil es mit ihrer Seriosität unvereinbar schien. Lachende Selbstdistanz kann jedoch gerade auch wissenschaftlich eine produktive Haltung sein: Ihre Liebe zur Literatur bringt sie nicht durch Thesengravität oder Pathos zum Ausdruck, sondern mit Kontingenzbewusstsein und Reflexion zumal auf die spielerischen Seiten der Literatur wie des Lebens.

Comment concevoir qu’un livret d’opéra ait pu être réécrit pour des marionnettes ou sous forme de pantomime ? Peut-on imaginer qu’une œuvre lyrique ait suscité plus de huit parodies ? Sait-on que Louis XVI et Marie-Antoinette avaient leur parodiste attitré ? Les réécritures comiques d’opéra, représentées sur les théâtres de la foire et des boulevards comme à la Comédie-Italienne de Paris et sur les théâtres privés, connaissent une vogue étonnante au siècle des Lumières. Parodier l’opéra, ce n’est pas écrire contre l’opéra, mais plutôt participer à sa promotion en jouant le double jeu de la critique et du divertissement. Les parodistes comme Fuzelier, Favart, Romagnesi ou Despréaux, manient autant l’art des vaudevilles que celui du pastiche, et possèdent une riche culture littéraire et musicale. Des opéras de Lully à ceux de Gluck, rares sont les œuvres à succès qui n’ont pas été parodiées. Retracer l’histoire de cette pratique permet d’entrer dans les arcanes de la vie théâtrale des Lumières, où les frontières entre culture populaire et culture élitiste sont brouillées, où l’opéra, l’opéra-comique et la parodie évoluent sans se quitter des yeux. Taxée de « mauvais genre » par certains, décrite comme un « spectacle gai, varié et même magnifique » (d’Argenson) par d’autres, la parodie d’opéra n’est pas un épiphénomène ; ce qui se joue avec elle, tout au long du XVIIIe siècle, c’est une certaine idée du théâtre comique en musique.

At the opening ceremony for the London 2012 Olympics, a global audience of nearly one billion viewers were treated to the unprecedented sight of James Bond meeting Queen Elizabeth II. Shortly after, the 'Queen' hurled herself out of a helicopter, her Union Jack parachute guiding her down to the Olympic Stadium. What it is about moments such as these that define both a particular idea of Britishness and a particular type of British film comedy? How has British cinema exploited parody as a means of negotiating its sense of identity? How does this function within a globalized marketplace and in the face of dominant Hollywood cinema?Beyond a Joke explores the myriad ways British film culture has used forms of parody, from the 1960s to the present day. It provides a contextual and textual analysis of a range of works that, while popular, have only rarely been the subject of serious academic attention - from Morecambe and Wise to Shaun of the Dead to the London 2012 Olympics' opening ceremony. Combining the methodologies both of film history and film theory, Beyond a Joke locates parody within specific industrial and cultural moments, while also looking in detail at the aesthetics of parody as a mode. Ultimately, such works are shown to be a form of culturally specific film or televisual product for exporting to the global market, in which 'Britishness', shaped in self-mocking and ironic terms, becomes the selling point. Written in an accessible style and illustrated throughout with a diverse range of examples, Beyond a Joke is the first book to explore parody within a specifically British context and makes an invaluable contribution to the scholarship on both British and global film culture.
