Operational art emerged from the campaigns of Frederick the Great to the end of the Napoleonic Wars. It was the result of three dynamic interrelationships: between military and non-military factors such as social, economic and political developments; between military theory and practice; and between developments in military theory and practice in France and Prussia. In the period 1740-1815 a major change in the complexity of warfare took place. This was reflected by an increase in the complexity of the analysis of warfare via the introduction of the operational level between the strateg

"This book examines the experience of two British Infantry Divisions, the 43rd (Wessex) and 53rd (Welsh), during the Overlord campaign in Northwest Europe. To understand the way the British fought during Operation Overlord, the book considers the political and military factors between 1918 and 1943 before addressing the major battles and many of the minor engagements and day-to-day experiences of the campaign. Through detailed exploration of unit war diaries and first-hand accounts, Louis Devine demonstrates how Montgomery's way of war translated to the divisions and their sub units. While previous literature has suggested that the British Army fought a cautious war in order to avoid the heavy casualties of the First World War, Devine challenges this concept by showing that the Overlord Campaign fought at sub-divisional levels was characterised by command pressure to achieve results quickly, hasty planning and a reliance on massive artillery and mortar contributions to compensate for deficiencies in anti-tank and armoured supportraits By following two British infantry divisions over a continuous period and focusing on soldiers' experience to offer a perspective 'from below', as well as challenging the consensus of a 'cautious' British campaign, this book provides a much-needed re-examination of the Overlord campaign which will be of great interest to students and scholars of the Second World War and modern military history in general."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

"Germany's failure in the first year of World War I remains a frequent subject of analysis. This book examines the structural failures that frustrated the Germans in the war's initial campaign, the invasion of Belgium. Too much routine in planning, command and execution led to groupthink, inflexibility and an overconfident belief that nothing could go too terribly wrong"--

"For years, the Marine Corps has touted the prescience of LtCol. "Pete" Ellis, USMC, who predicted in 1921 that the United States would fight Japan and how the Pacific Theater would be won. Now these predictions and other works by the "amphibious prophet" are collected together for the first time. Included are Ellis' essays on naval and amphibious operations that the United States Navy and Marine Corps would use to win the war against Imperial Japan, as well as his articles about counterinsurgency and conventional war based on his warfighting experiences in the Philippines and in Europe during World War I"--
