Existing Online Public Access Catalogues (OPACs) demonstrate differences in the range and complexity of their functional features, terminology, and help facilities. While many libraries already have OPACs, there is a need to bring together, in the form of guidelines or recommendations, a corpus of good practice to assist libraries in designing or re-designing the displays for their OPACs, taking into consideration the needs of users. Les nouvelles technologies entrent dans les bibliothèques... Nombre de bibliothèques publiques proposent aujourd'hui à leurs utilisateurs des catalogues informatisés. La Bibliothèque publique d'information a mis en place en 1988 deux systèmes de consultation différents. Joëlle Le Marec s'intéresse ici aux modes d'usages mis en œuvre par le public. La multiplicité et la diversité des façons de faire ne rencontrent pas toujours les objectifs des concepteurs. L'auteur met en évidence deux grandes logiques d'usage : l'imaginaire du dialogue entre l'homme et le système et le modèle spatial du parcours (labyrinthique ?) de consultation. Cette recherche s'inscrit dans une réflexion plus générale sur les usages sociaux des nouvelles technologies et sur les modifications dont elles peuvent être sources dans la réception et l'appropriation des documents.

OPAC, CIEL,… autant de termes divers pour désigner les outils d’accès des usagers aux catalogues informatisés des bibliothèques. L’organisation de ces catalogues est complexe, et met en jeu par exemple aussi bien la connaissance de la psychologie des utilisateurs, que le contrôle des bases bibliographiques, ou que l’ergonomie des écrans proposés aux publics… Eliane Bernhart, responsable de la Coordination bibliothéconomique et informatique à la B.P. I., a réuni des chercheurs, consultants et professionnels des bibliothèques afin de proposer ici un guide d’analyse et d’action pour une mise en oeuvre efficace de ces catalogues en ligne, au service de tous les publics.

The rise of Google and its integration into nearly every aspect of our lives has pushed libraries to adopt similar "Google-like" search tools, called discovery systems. Because these tools are provided by libraries and search scholarly materials rather than the open web, we often assume they are more "accurate" or "reliable" than their general-purpose peers like Google or Bing. But discovery systems are still software written by people with prejudices and biases, library software vendors are subject to strong commercial pressures that are often hidden behind diffuse collection-development contracts and layers of administration, and they struggle to integrate content from thousands of different vendors and their collective disregard for consistent metadata.Library discovery systems struggle with accuracy, relevance, and human biases, and these shortcomings have the potential to shape the academic research and worldviews of the students and faculty who rely on them. While human bias, commercial interests, and problematic metadata have long affected researchers' access to information, algorithms in library discovery systems increase the scale of the negative effects on users, while libraries continue to promote their "objective" and "neutral" search tools.
