Psychopharmacology is the study of the effects of psychoactive drugs on the functioning of the central nervous system at all levels of analysis, thus embracing cognition, behaviour, psychological states, neurophysiology, neurochemistry, gene expression and molecular biology. It includes, as an integral part of its domain, the interaction of environmental and genetic factors with psychoactive drug action, their medicinal and social uses, and their abuse. The Encyclopedia of Psychopharmacology provides detailed information on psychopharmacology and its sub-disciplines, such as clinical psychopharmacology, molecular neuropsychopharmacology, behavioural pharmacology in laboratory animals, preclinical psychopharmacology, human experimental psychopharmacology. The wide-ranging entries in the Encyclopedia of Psychopharmacology are written by leading experts. They will provide basic and clinical scientists in academia as well as industry with valuable information about the field of psychopharmacology. Also people in related fields, students, teachers, and interested laypeople will benefit from the important and relevant information on the most recent developments of psychopharmacology. Entries will fall into several main categories: Methods, techniques and target systems (explaining nature of a technique and its uses and limitations) - Drugs and classes of drug (mainly describing effects and mechanisms of action) - Psychiatric states (explaining drugs used to treat them) - Miscellaneous currently interesting topics that do not fall within the above (e.g. cognitive enhancement, regulation and licensing, substance use in religious rituals).

The merging of different basic and clinical science disciplines towards the common goal of fighting against cancer has long ago called for the establishment of a comprehensive reference source both as a tool to close the language gap between clinical and basic science investigators and as a platform of information for students and informed laymen alike. The Encyclopedia of Cancer provides rapid access to focused information on all topics of cancer research for clinicians, research scientists and advanced students. Given the overwhelming success of the Second Edition, which appeared in 2009, and fast recent development in the different fields of cancer research, it has been decided to publish a third fully revised and expanded edition, following the principal concept of the first edition that has proven so successful. Recent developments are seeing a dynamic progress in basic and clinical cancer science, with translational research increasingly becoming a new paradigm in cancer research. In particular, new approaches to both Personalized Cancer Medicine and Targeted Therapies have made promising progress. While the Second Edition featured scholarly contributions from approximately 1.000 scientists/clinicians in four Volumes, the Third Edition includes 1.300 contributors in 7 Volumes with an A-Z format of approx. 7000 entries. It provides definitions of common acronyms and short definitions of related terms and processes in the form of keyword entries. In addition, there are detailed essays, which provide comprehensive information on syndromes, genes and molecules, and processes and methods. Each essay is well-structured, with extensive cross-referencing between all entries. In the Third Edition, topical Essays present a comprehensive picture of major cancers, such as Breast Cancer, Colorectal Cancer, Prostate Cancer, Ovarian Cancer, Renal Cancer, Lung Cancer, and Hematological Maligancies, Leukemias and Lymphomas. For each of these cancers, different authoritative Essays are included that cover topics ranging from Pathology, to Clinical Oncology and Targeted Therapies. This new feature should meet the expectance that a wide community has towards a major cancer reference works. The Encyclopedia of Cancer will be accessible both in print and online, and this information source should be of value to both the clinical and basic scientific community as well as to the public.

This book introduces readers to essential methods and applications in translational biomedical informatics, which include biomedical big data, cloud computing and algorithms for understanding omics data, imaging data, electronic health records and public health data. The storage, retrieval, mining and knowledge discovery of biomedical big data will be among the key challenges for future translational research. The paradigm for precision medicine and healthcare needs to integratively analyze not only the data at the same level – e.g. different omics data at the molecular level – but also data from different levels – the molecular, cellular, tissue, clinical and public health level. This book discusses the following major aspects: the structure of cross-level data; clinical patient information and its shareability; and standardization and privacy. It offers a valuable guide for all biologists, biomedical informaticians and clinicians with an interest in Precision Medicine Informatics.

An essential text, this is a fully updated third edition of a classic. It provides rapid access to information on molecular pharmacology for research scientists, clinicians and advanced students. With the A-Z format of over 2,000 entries, around 350 authors provide a complete reference to the area of molecular pharmacology. The book combines the knowledge of classic pharmacology with the more recent approach of the precise analysis of the molecular mechanisms by which drugs exert their effects. Short keyword entries define common acronyms, terms and phrases. In addition, detailed essays provide in-depth information on drugs, cellular processes, molecular targets, techniques, molecular mechanisms, and general principles. .

This book covers the mechanisms of renal cyst development as well as the aberrant signaling pathways which are involved in Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD). ADPKD is a genetic disease in which cysts appear in the epithelial lining of both kidneys. End stage ADPKD patients experience renal failure and require dialysis or a renal transplantation. There are no specific targeted therapies for ADPKD currently available, making it important to understand the basic cellular mechanisms underlying the onset and progression of ADPKD, in order to identify potential therapeutic targets for the disease. Several therapeutic approaches that have been attempted to date are reviewed. This work provides a broad overview of ADPKD and highlights the key challenges currently faced by researchers in this field. Furthermore, it provides insight into ADPKD to facilitate the development of novel biomarkers for ADPKD and to direct future research into this challenging pathology. This book is suitable for clinicians who have encountered patients with ADPKD, for clinicians / researchers working in the field of ADPKD and more generally on the kidney and kidney related disorders and for students of medicine with an interest in internal medicine.
