Abstract

The author’s work constitutes the first synthesis, since Father Glory’s work published in 1948, about an unknown aspect of Prehistoric art : postglacial symbolic paintings. This is an inventory ot the Provence painted sites made after systematic surveys which led to rectify interpretation and location mistakes and to put the sites in their archaeological context. This is also an approach to the delicate questions of datation, typology and interpretation. This work appears as a critical study and a documentary corpus necessary to keep in memory these Neolithic art witnesses which disappear more and more every year because of natural agents and vandalism.

Abstract

Un second volume, consacré à l’occupation gallo- romaine de Roanne, paraîtra prochainement dans la collection This book provides a synthesis of the archeological research carried out in the town of Roanne (Loire) It was the site of a small Roman town whose name on the Peutinger Table and in Ptolomey is recorded as Rodumna and whose Gallic origin has been recognised since the 1950s. The small agglomeration of the late Iron Age became a maior centre of population in the Gallo roman civitas ot the SegusiaviThe work includes a detailed catalogue of the finds which can act as a basis for comparisons with other sites in central Gaul. The evolution of the settlement area from the 2nd and 1st centuries BC is described in detail. The study of the linds shows an important…

Abstract

This study gives an account of the results of the archaeological excavations of the Gallo-Roman village at Roanne (Rodumna). The research is based mainly on 22 assemblages of material dating from the 1st century B.C. to the 3rd century A.D., including glassware, iron and bronze objects, and above all an exceptional corpus of pottery. Detailed analysis of the pottery and its relationship with the rest of the material enabled a chronology to be established. Using criteria such as frequency, use, variety of pottery production, datation, origins, etc., this chronology was found to be in continuity with previously studied Gaulish horizons. A series of illustrations places the material within the context of its discovery. The results of this study lead to an outline of the economic development of Rodumna - a small, rural town, built of clay and wood, very much in keeping with…

Abstract

The book (Special Issue) presents impressive new results related to a wide spectrum of occurrences of platinum-group minerals (PGM) and natural compounds enriched in platinum-group elements (PGE), which are associated with various complexes and deposits, such as Uralian-Alaskan-type complexes, layered intrusions and placers. The geographical locations of the involved deposits and complexes include, on a truly international scale, different areas of the Urals, Western and Eastern Sayans and Gornaya Shoria in Siberia, Southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt in China, Northern Michigan, USA, South Africa and Zimbabwe, etc. Of particular interest is the first description of a new species of PGM, thalhammerite (approved by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association), which is a new species of palladium-silver sulfobismuthide discovered in the Noril’sk region of Russia. Additionally, comprehensive reviews, on compositional variations in Pt–Fe alloy minerals and processes of transformations of PGM in exogenic environments, are presented which will also attract attention from international readers.

Abstract

Abstract

The need for establishing a formal limit between the concentration of potentially toxic inorganic compounds in groundwater due to natural processes or to anthropogenic pollution has prompted researchers to develop methods to derive this boundary and define the "Natural Background Level" (NBL). NBLs can be used as screening levels to define the good chemical status of groundwater bodies, as well as to fix the remediation target in polluted sites. The book "Natural Background Levels in Groundwater" brings together a set of case studies across Europe and worldwide where the assessments and identification of this boundary are performed with different methodologies. It provides an overview of the approaches and protocols applied and tested in different states for NBL assessment, ranging from well-known methods, such as component separation or cumulative probability plot methods, to new computer-aided protocols. The main objective of this book is to bring together and discuss different methodological approaches and tools to improve the assessment of groundwater NBLs. The overview, discussion and comparison of different approaches and case histories for NBL calculation can be useful for scientists, water managers and practitioners.

Abstract

This Special Issue covers a broad range of topics related to the mineralogy of noble metals (Au, Ag, Pt, Pd, Rh, and Ru) and the occurrence, formation, and distribution of these elements in natural ore-forming systems. This collection of eleven research articles discusses various problems related to these topics. I hope this Special Issue will contribute to a better understanding of the genesis of gold, silver, and other noble metal deposits as well as the behavior of these elements in endogenic and supergene environments, and suggest ways forward to solving the problem of their full extraction from ores.

Abstract

Landslides are among the most widespread and frequent natural hazards. Landsliding is linked to the combination of geological, geomorphological, and climatic factors in response to trigger mechanisms, mostly represented by heavy rainfall events, seismicity, or human action. Landslides directly and indirectly impact a territory, causing fatalities and huge socio-economic losses. Consequently, to avoid serious consequences and support sustainable territorial planning, there is a clear need of correct land use policies and best practices for long-term risk mitigation and reduction. In this context, geomorphological field activities, satellite remote sensing, landslide susceptibility mapping, and innovative GIS analysis offer effective support for mapping and monitoring landslides’ activity at both the local and regional scales. All landslide types are considered, from rockfalls to debris flows, from slow-moving slides to very rapid rock avalanches. Contributions to this Special Issue report key advances in landslide susceptibility mapping, environmental risk management in mass movement-prone areas, and landslide analysis in different geomorphological/morphostructural environments. Each article describes a distinct methodological approach to accurately investigate landslide phenomena and assess slope stability. Each article provides a scientific basis useful for the implementation of land planning, civil protection activities, and mitigation measures in different geological–geomorphological frameworks.
