Wireless communications have advanced significantly over the past two decades. The multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technology was proposed in the 1990's as a viable solution that can overcome the data rate limit experienced by single-input-single-output (SISO) systems. This resource is focused on printed MIMO antenna system design. Printed antennas are widely used in mobile and handheld terminals due to their conformity with the device, low cost, good integration within the device elements and mechanical parts, as well as ease of fabrication. A perfect design companion for practicing engineers, this book provides full design examples from literature, along with detailed illustrations for the various antenna geometries. This resource overviews the various applications that currently depend on printed MIMO antennas, and provides design guidelines and remarks throughout the book for guidance. Show more.

Quasi-Orthogonal Space-Time Block Code presents an up-to-date, comprehensive and in-depth discussion of an important emerging class of space-time codes, called the Quasi-Orthogonal STBC (QO-STBC). Used in Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) communication systems, they provide transmit diversity with higher code rates than the well-known orthogonal STBC (O-STBC), yet at lower decoding complexity than non-orthogonal STBC. This book will help readers gain a broad understanding of the fundamental principles as well as the state-of-the-art work in QO-STBC, thus enabling them to appreciate

This book introduces readers to a reconfigurable chip architecture for future wireless communication systems, such as 5G and beyond. The proposed architecture perfectly meets the demands for future mobile communication solutions to support different standards, algorithms, and antenna sizes, and to accommodate the evolution of standards and algorithms. It employs massive MIMO detection algorithms, which combine the advantages of low complexity and high parallelism, and can fully meet the requirements for detection accuracy. Further, the architecture is implemented using ASIC, which offers high energy efficiency, high area efficiency and low detection error. After introducing massive MIMO detection algorithms and circuit architectures, the book describes the ASIC implementation for verifying the massive MIMO detection. In turn, it provides detailed information on the proposed reconfigurable architecture: the data path and configuration path for massive MIMO detection algorithms, including the processing unit, interconnections, storage mechanism, configuration information format, and configuration method. .

Large MIMO systems, with tens to hundreds of antennas, are a promising emerging communication technology. This book provides a unique overview of this technology, covering the opportunities, engineering challenges, solutions and state of the art of large MIMO test beds. There is in-depth coverage of algorithms for large MIMO signal processing, based on meta-heuristics, belief propagation and Monte Carlo sampling techniques, and suited for large MIMO signal detection, precoding and LDPC code designs. The book also covers the training requirement and channel estimation approaches in large-scale point-to-point and multi-user MIMO systems; spatial modulation is also included. Issues like pilot contamination and base station cooperation in multi-cell operation are addressed. A detailed exposition of MIMO channel models, large MIMO channel sounding measurements in the past and present, and large MIMO test beds is also presented. An ideal resource for academic researchers, next generation wireless system designers and developers, and practitioners in wireless communications.

This work focuses on the analysis and design of multiple element antennas (MEA) and their interaction with the propagation channel. In particular, attention is given to urban channels and how its information throughput, i.e. capacity, can be improved. With this in mind, this work extends an existing network model of the communication system in order to reduce computation time, investigates the communicational limits of MEA systems and proposes a synthesis method for capacity maximization.

In recent years, OFDM has become more and more important for radar applications. A disadvantage, however, is the need for high sampling rates, which is exactly the starting point of the frequency comb OFDM radar scheme. With its help, the bandwidth in the radar channel can be enhanced without increasing the sampling rates at the same time. In this way, a high range resolution can be achieved without using fast converters with high sampling rates.
