Stellar kinematics is concerned with the movements of stars in the vicinity of the Sun, as well as with some aspects of the structure of our Galaxy in the same vicinity. This book discuses mathematical techniques developed for these studies, some classical and employed since the 19th century, such as least squares, and others of more recent origin and not included in other texts dedicated to stellar kinematics, including total least squares, in use since the 1980s, and semi-definite programming, developed since the 1990s. Other useful methods test for the randomness of data and ways to eliminate or minimize discordant data. Professional astronomers and students of astronomy will be interested in these techniques, many developed for use in other areas of science and engineering. Likewise, engineers and mathematicians may be unaware of how their disciplines are applicable to a field such as stellar kinematics.

In contrast to other introductions to special relativity, this one aims at a conceptually clear presentation of the theory. While not shying away from the proper mathematics, an emphasis is placed on an easy understanding of the underlying concepts, rather than technical calulcations only. With an entertaining writing style, comic-like illustrations and instructive problems, this textbook makes the entry to special relativity a lot easier.

This is one of the very few books focusing on relativistic statistical mechanics, and is written by a leading expert in this special field. It started from the notion of relativistic kinetic theory, half a century ago, exploding into relativistic statisti

The present work contains a selection of research that is focused on the development of the kinematics; in this way, we can find the evolution of the kinematics in recent years, like applications in navigation systems, parallel robots, manipulators, and mobile robots. This work also includes new methods for the analysis in different applications, which are important in the proposal of new paradigms. Modeling is presented in applications oriented to a better understanding of biosystems; on the other hand, we also have applications of intelligent systems that enrich and complement the analysis of movement and position. Definitely, we hope that the present research work enriches and contributes with ideas and elements of interest for each of our readers.

Numerous problems in engineering and biology can be described, characterized, and analyzed in kinematics terms. In classical machinery and robotics the most distinctive characteristic is constrained motion of multi-degree-of-freedom kinematic chains. Robotic arms and manipulators have become essential devices in industrial applications and medicine. This book provides the reader with an updated look at the current trends in kinematics methods and applications. Section 1 deals with kinematics of linkages and includes analysis of cam mechanisms and transformation of rotary motion into oscillation. Section 2 covers compliant mechanisms, whereby elastically deformable parts are part of the mechanism. Finally, Section 3 deals with kinematics of spacecrafts and satellites in the contexts of global navigation systems and of space robot analysis.

Biomimetic Robotic Artificial Muscles presents a comprehensive up-to-date overview of several types of electroactive materials with a view of using them as biomimetic artificial muscles. The purpose of the book is to provide a focused, in-depth, yet self-contained treatment of recent advances made in several promising EAP materials. In particular, ionic polymer-metal composites, conjugated polymers, and dielectric elastomers are considered. Manufacturing, physical characterization, modeling, and control of the materials are presented. Namely, the book adopts a systems perspective to integrate

Advanced Theory of Constraint and Motion Analysis for Robot Mechanisms provides a complete analytical approach to the invention of new robot mechanisms and the analysis of existing designs based on a unified mathematical description of the kinematic and geometric constraints of mechanisms. Beginning with a high level introduction to mechanisms and components, the book moves on to present a new analytical theory of terminal constraints for use in the development of new spatial mechanisms and structures. It clearly describes the application of screw theory to kinematic pr
