Abstract

In recent decades, great progress has been made in our understanding of zonal jets across many subjects - atmospheric science, oceanography, planetary science, geophysical fluid dynamics, plasma physics, magnetohydrodynamics, turbulence theory - but communication between researchers from different fields has been weak or non-existent. Even the terminology in different fields may be so disparate that researchers working on similar problems do not understand each other. This comprehensive, multidisciplinary volume will break cross-disciplinary barriers and aid the advancement of the subject. It presents a state-of-the-art summary of all relevant branches of the physics of zonal jets, from the leading experts. The phenomena and concepts are introduced at a level accessible to beginning graduate students and researchers from different fields. The book also includes a very extensive bibliography.

Abstract

Astrophysical jets are spectacular displays of gas or dust ejected from a range of cosmic bodies; they are seemingly ubiquitous on scales from comets to black holes. This volume reviews our understanding of jet processes and provides a modern guide to their observation and the role they play in many long-standing problems in astrophysics. It covers the major discoveries in gamma-ray bursts, solar and stellar jets and cometary jets. Specific physical processes for all classes of jet are illustrated and discussed in depth, as a backdrop to explaining spectacular jet images. Current jet models raise as many issues as they solve, so the final chapter looks at the new questions to be answered. Written at an entry level for postgraduate students, this volume incorporates introductions to all the governing physics, providing a comprehensive and insightful guide to the study of jets for researchers across all branches of astrophysics.

Abstract

Almost all conventional matter in the Universe is fluid, and fluid dynamics plays a crucial role in astrophysics. This graduate textbook, first published in 2007, provides a basic understanding of the fluid dynamical processes relevant to astrophysics. The mathematics used to describe these processes is simplified to bring out the underlying physics. The authors cover many topics, including wave propagation, shocks, spherical flows, stellar oscillations, the instabilities caused by effects such as magnetic fields, thermal driving, gravity, shear flows, and the basic concepts of compressible fluid dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics. The authors are Directors of the UK Astrophysical Fluids Facility (UKAFF) at the University of Leicester, and editors of the Cambridge Astrophysics Series. This book has been developed from a course in astrophysical fluid dynamics taught at the University of Cambridge. It is suitable for graduate students in astrophysics, physics and applied mathematics, and requires only a basic familiarity with fluid dynamics.

Abstract

This book, first published in 2003, is an exposition of what we knew about the physics underlying the onset of instability in liquid sheets and jets. Wave motion and breakup phenomena subsequent to the onset of instability are carefully explained. Physical concepts are established through rigorous mathematics, accurate numerical analyses and comparison of theory with experiment. Exercises are provided for students, and these help familiarize the reader with the required mathematical tools. This book further provides a rational basis for designing equipment and processes involving the phenomena of sheet and jet breakup. Researchers interested in transition to turbulence, hydrodynamic stability or combustion will find this book a highly useful resource, whether their background lies in engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine or applied mathematics.

Abstract

Recently, plasma spray has been received a large number of attentions for various type of applications due to the nature of the plasma plume and deposition structure. The plasma gas generated by the arc, consists of free electrons, ionized atoms, some neutral atoms, and undissociated diatomic molecules. The temperature of the core of the plasma jet may exceed up to 30,000 K. Gas velocity in the plasma spray torch can be varied from subsonic to supersonic using converging-diverging nozzles. Heat transfer in the plasma jet is primarily the result of the recombination of the ions and re-association of atoms in diatomic gases on the powder surfaces and absorption of radiation. Taking advantages of the plasma plume atmosphere, plasma spray can be used for surface modification and treatment, especially for activation of polymer surfaces. I addition, plasma spray can be used to deposit nanostructures as well as advanced coating structures for new applications in wear and corrosion resistance. Some state-of-the-art studies of advanced applications of plasma spraying such as nanostructure coatings, surface modifications, biomaterial deposition, and anti wear and corrosion coatings are presented in this book.

Abstract

Impressive progress has been made in the field of laser-plasma acceleration in the last decade, with outstanding achievements from both experimental and theoretical viewpoints. Closely exploiting the development of ultra-intense, ultrashort pulse lasers, laser-plasma acceleration has developed rapidly, achieving accelerating gradients of the order of tens of GeV/m, and making the prospect of miniature accelerators a more realistic possibility. This book presents the lectures delivered at the Enrico Fermi International School of Physics and summer school: "Laser-Plasma Acceleration" , held in Varenna, Italy, in June 2011. The school provided an opportunity for young scientists to experience the best from the worlds of laser-plasma and accelerator physics, with intensive training and hands-on opportunities related to key aspects of laser-plasma acceleration. Subjects covered include: the secrets of lasers; the power of numerical simulations; beam dynamics; and the elusive world of laboratory plasmas. The objective of the school was to establish a common knowledge base for the future laser-plasma accelerator community. These published proceedings aim to provide a wider community with a reference covering a wide range of topics, knowledge of which will be necessary to future research on laser-plasma acceleration. The book also provides references to selected existing literature for further reading.
