The relation to time is an essential structural element of speech. In this volume, French and Spanish specialists are addressing speeches that, beyond their typological diversity – going from grammatical speech to literary or historiographical discourse – share a common matter. The relations to times give rise to quite often discrepant arrangements. What are those «discrepancies»? What do they mean? Is it possible to theorize them and in what way? These questions - and those they imply in return - are at the core of the works presented here.

This chapter deals with compounds with hierarchically identical constituents, referred to as dvandvas in the Sanskrit tradition and with a variety of other names in many accounts (e.g., co-compounds, copulative, binominals, etc.) (cf. discussion in Bauer 2008 and Wälchli 2005). In Spanish the two largest groups are made up of two nouns or two adjectives. These nominal and adjectival concatenative patterns have several subtypes each, which are discussed in Section 8.1 and 8.2, respectively. A much smaller group is made up of two concatenated verbs; this is an exocentric class, because the resulting compound is always nominal (8.3). Finally, there are complex additive numerals, which are possibly the clearest example of a productive class, since they are infinite by definition (8.4) (Table 8.1).

The study focuses on the correlations existing between the conceptual properties of the modalities of visual and auditory perception and the semantic-syntactic behavior of the verbs of perception ver/voir, oír/entendre, mirar/regarder, and escuchar/écouter. In part one of the book, the author argues that visual perception and auditory perception differ in terms of extra-linguistic criteria. Part two draws upon empirical material to advance syntactic evidence for a connection between the cognitive features of visual and auditory perception and the syntactic behavior of verbs expressing such perception.
